They discussed Iran Blinken-Lavrov: A small opportunity to reach an agreement

by

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he had discussed Iran today with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, warning that there was only a short time left before talks on rescuing the Iran nuclear deal could be completed successfully.

Blinken told reporters that the agreement is an example of how Moscow and Washington can work together on security issues, urging Russia to use its influence and relationship with Iran to make Tehran understand. the sense of urgency.

Blinken said there was still a chance for a return to the deal – which collapsed in 2018 when then-US President Donald Trump withdrew from the country. He warned, however, that Tehran’s continued nuclear progress would prevent any return to the Joint Integrated Action Plan (JAP) unless a new agreement is reached in the coming weeks.

“Talks with Iran on a reciprocal return to compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (CSTO) have reached a critical juncture,” Blinken said, referring to the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

“If no agreement is reached in the coming weeks, Iran’s continued nuclear progress will make it impossible to return to the CIS. But at the moment, there is still a chance, a small opportunity, to successfully conclude these talks and address the remaining concerns. on all sides “.

The agreement between Iran and the major powers lifted sanctions against Tehran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activities.

The government of US President Joe Biden and its European allies said on Thursday that it was now a matter of weeks before the deal was rescued after the latest round of talks in which a French diplomatic source said there had been no progress on key issues.

Indirect talks between Iran and the United States to revive the agreement resumed two months ago.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabnolakhian wrote on Twitter that in talks with Lavrov he discussed the acceleration by Russia of building new nuclear power plants in Iran.

The Atomic Energy Agency of Iran announced today that Russia is building the second and third units of the Bushehr power plant in accordance with Iran’s plan to generate at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity using nuclear energy.

“The implementation process is underway according to plan, despite delays in financial payments,” Behrouz Kamalvadi, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Agency of Iran, told the Iranian news agency IRNA.

Iran, which owes Russia at least $ 500 million for work on the Bushehr nuclear power plant, has reportedly blamed US sanctions for delays in paying off its debt.
