In a statement by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Turkey claims that “the UN is not fulfilling its basic tasks and functions, such as equal treatment of both sides on the island and finding solutions to the differences”.

“We find unacceptable and strongly condemn the physical intervention carried out yesterday (August 18) by the soldiers of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force to block the Pylas-Arsos road, which is being built on the sovereign territory of the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)” . We fully support the statement of the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs” of the “TRNC” and the justified reaction of the “TRNC” authorities.

The position shown by the United Nations regarding the Pylas-Arsos road, which is a humanitarian project, aimed at facilitating the direct access of the citizens of the “TRNC” to Pyla in their own homeland, and the subsequent statements of the United Nations Nations are incompatible with the impartial attitude that the peacekeeping force is obliged to display on the island.

UNFICYP on the one hand contributed significantly to the escalation of tension in relation to the road construction project, which started peacefully, and on the other hand presented itself as a victim in the incidents.

In fact, what is expected of the UN peacekeeping force is to contribute to solving the humanitarian needs on the island. Nevertheless, the attitude of the UN to turn a blind eye to the fait accompli of the “Greek Cypriot Administration” in the dead zone for years, at the same time preventing the Turkish Cypriots from satisfying their justified humanitarian needs, cannot be explained.

This situation clearly reveals that the UN is not fulfilling its basic tasks and functions, such as treating both sides on the island equally and finding solutions to disputes.

After yesterday’s events, the United Nations and the UN peacekeeping force will have to make an intensive effort in the next period, in order not to completely lose the trust of the authorities and the people of the “TRNC”. As a guarantor country, we call on the UN Peacekeeping Force to refrain from actions and rhetoric that could overshadow its mission in Cyprus, which has been ongoing for almost 60 years, to deal equally with both sides in Cyprus and to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity of the “TRDBC”.
