“The attempt by Mr. Mitsotakis to highlight the importance of the European perspective of the Western Balkans, at the time when he systematically keeps silent that this perspective – and together with the hope for peace and stability – thawed in 2018 and exists today thanks to the Prespa Agreement, is monument of hypocrisy”
“A lack of strategy in the government’s foreign policy and a lack of a coherent strategy for the Balkans for the benefit of Greece’s interests”, attributes SYRIZA-PS on the occasion of tomorrow’s (Monday) dinner hosted by the prime minister for leaders of Balkan countries.
“The attempt of Mr. Mitsotakis to highlight the importance of the European perspective of the Western Balkans, at the time when he systematically keeps silent that this perspective – and together with the hope for peace and stability – thawed in 2018 and exists today thanks to the Prespa Agreement, is a monument of hypocrisy”, says SYRIZA in its announcement and adds:
“It highlights the refusal of Mr. Mitsotakis to take advantage of this historic initiative in favor of the country and his choice to be guided by communication priorities and the internal party balances of the ND.” He then “reminds that Mr. Mitsotakis is the only European Prime Minister who on the one hand calls on the EU to proceed with the integration of North Macedonia (and all the countries of the Western Balkans) in less than ten years, while on the other hand he refuses to ratify and 3 technical agreements with the neighboring country”.
Continuing the criticism, he refers to the relations with Albania: “It is the Prime Minister who, on the one hand, today, does not invite the Prime Minister of Albania because of the Beleri case, but on the other hand, a few months ago, he held fiestas with him in the minority villages of Albania, exchanging pre-election compliments. We expect, at the very least, that tomorrow’s informal dinner will not be another PR opportunity, but that concrete initiatives by Greece will be presented in favor of the Western Balkans’ accession perspective following the Thessaloniki Agenda and the Prespa Agreement and under the conditions set in June 2019 by the EU with the intervention of the SYRIZA Government”.
He also refers to the Cyprus issue and asks the prime minister “if the President of Ukraine will indeed attend the dinner tomorrow in order to properly highlight the need to end the illegal Russian invasion, the importance of absolute respect for territorial integrity and international law and the need to demonstrate of solidarity in the states where these standing principles are violated, we expect that messages will be given about the Cypriot issue and the President of the Republic of Cyprus will also be present at the dinner – especially in this critical period. Mr. Mitsotakis must defend the fixed positions of our country far from the logic of the loyal and given ally of the USA”.
