The authorities and the judiciary must intervene decisively for the “self-proclaimed ‘sheriffs'”, emphasizes SYRIZA PS in a statement and accuses the ND government of having “a huge responsibility for its tolerance of these phenomena”.

In particular, SYRIZA reports that “a new shocking video of extreme right-wing self-styled ‘sheriffs’ capturing and beating migrants in Evros has been released”, noting that “it seems that last week’s abominable incident was not isolated, but is for a situation which is taking uncontrollable dimensions”.

He underlines that “the question is, what are the competent authorities and justice doing to deal with these networks that want to impose the law of the ‘Wild West’, that capture people and incite hatred”.

The official opposition party emphasizes that “even now, the authorities and justice must intervene decisively. Heinous acts of abduction and illegal detention are serious crimes against the individual as well as against the state. At the same time, Greek criminal law has a network of provisions for the strict prosecution of racist crimes”.

He comments that “the government of the New Democracy has a huge responsibility for its tolerance of these phenomena.
