The characterization of the disasters in Thessaly as a “backlash” is far below the circumstances, and cannot be used when the whole of Thessaly has been flooded, Mr. Tsakalotos said.
He described what is happening tragically as state and administrative degeneration, with the deadly floods in Thessaly, Euclid Tsakalotos, speaking to the Attica TV station.
“The questions are many,” he said. “Like how we’re going to address the needs of citizens who are suffering right now. But also more broadly: Why is nothing being done about the Goldamer report on the prevention of forest fires, why the anti-flood projects have not progressed – it is no secret that there is dissatisfaction with Greece from the EU side, as it seems that the relevant European expertise is not taken into account plan. What about the Recovery and Resilience Fund and what is the amount of resources that will be allocated for disaster recovery, what are the possibilities of renegotiation”.
He emphasized that “we have a government that does not seem to have love for the public, for the environment, for the public wealth”. “We need a new bloc of social and political forces to do the opposite,” he said.
Comment how the characterization of the disasters in Thessaly as a “backlash” is far below the circumstancesand he cannot use it when all of Thessaly is flooded.
He disagreed with the notion that responsibilities are timeless and that all parties, when in power, say and do the same: “SYRIZA-PS tried to learn from the experiences of governance. For the fires, for example, the Goldamer report came out.”
“Regarding the responsibilities, Euclid Tsakalotos pointed out that the ND government and Kyriakos Mitsotakis must answer many questions. Both for planning and resource management. They have huge responsibilities, he said, and SYRIZA-PS will be, we will be, very aggressive towards them. I hope they don’t answer “41%” again because this attitude constitutes a degeneration of democracy”, he underlined.
As far as the internal parties are concerned, he described the defeat and departure of A. Tsipras as a “big shock”, adding that the reaction of the bodies so far, as well as the attitude of the candidates, creates optimism for the future of the party. Among the candidates, he said, there is much in common, with a different stigma of course, but with a unifying spirit.
Regarding the way of political confrontation, he said that it is an outdated way of opposition to focus on the person and not on the policies.
Finally, he noted that as party president he will be first among equals. But even as prime minister, he will have a completely different leadership style than Mr. Mitsotakis.
