Mitsotakis in Sakellaropoulou: We learn from our mistakes

by

Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the recent bad weather in his first conversations in today’s meeting with the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Madam President, especially for our fellow citizens in Attica who have been tested by this unprecedented snowfall of “Hope”, what I want to emphasize is that the effort to build a resilient and efficient state is ongoing and is a non-negotiable priority for this government. There will be setbacks, there will be failures that we always have to bravely acknowledge, mainly so that we can learn from our mistakes and become better and better. But I must tell you that overall the work that has been done in the field of Civil Protection in these 30 months I consider to be very important and we have laid the foundations to be able to acquire procedures, equipment, training so that we are ready to deal with any unexpected no matter how intense it is. “And on this path we will continue to work even harder so that we can finally be successful in the goals we have set,” said the prime minister.

Speaking on the same subject, the President of the Republic said: “Mr. President, the fires of summer and the recent bad weather teach us that the country should as soon as possible acquire and consolidate a modern and effective model of crisis management. Crises that science now accepts are linked to climate change and are unfortunately expected to show an upward trend in the future. This model should be able, even in extreme conditions, with the proper coordination and cooperation of all stakeholders and the right logistical infrastructure to ensure and offer citizens safety and protection both in terms of prevention and reduction of adverse effects are expected both naturally and in the context of dealing when this situation arises. There are many things that need to be done I realize, but they are absolutely necessary. These days our fellow citizens have lived in very difficult conditions, as you said especially in Attica, they have gone through difficult times, I hope that these phenomena have slowly been dealt with in their entirety. Of course, the timely information and cooperation of the citizens with the state and local bodies for this difficult task is equally important, there is a lot to be done. I think that once again they deserve congratulations and thanks to the executives of the Armed Forces, EKAB, HEDNO, the Local Government and all the branches where they were able to respond to the extent that they responded and offered to our fellow citizens who were in conditions. I would like to stress the importance of offering volunteers and organizations to vulnerable groups, for example the homeless that you and I have had the opportunity to see, I have repeatedly seen lately. It is important the work they offer and it is really worth supporting these people and organizations from the State because in difficult times no one is left over “.

The Prime Minister, taking the floor again, added: “Allow me a supplementary remark in relation to what you said and after thanking all the executives of the state mechanism, the Armed Forces and our volunteers who helped to face this adventure. of last Monday’s snowfall. The important thing, as I told you, is to learn from our mistakes. I want to emphasize that in the issue of restoration of electricity we moved much faster than we had in relation to “Medea” because we realized then that there were weaknesses in our planning and because we had taken care to have mobilized many more teams to deal with a problem which appears in every big snowstorm, I think the citizens understand, they saw the volume of snow that fell, when a tree falls and cuts a pillar of medium or low voltage. We had 200,000 households without electricity on Monday night and the restoration of electricity was much faster than that of the previous blizzard. Whenever we have extreme weather events there will be difficulties, I think everyone understands that. The issue is to be able to deal with them as efficiently as possible and, as you rightly pointed out, I place great emphasis on coordination, standardization of procedures, timely decision-making and the immediate mobilization of the entire state mechanism based on planning. which we have prepared. So I think we got our lessons from this bad weather too. I want to be honest with you, our emphasis was to keep Athens – Lamia open because we always had problems there and it was kept open. “Unfortunately, we had a problem on the main highway in Athens, Attiki Odos, for reasons which I think we have explained and I do not think we need to analyze much further.”

JP MORGAN’s investment: A practical vote of confidence in the prospects of the Greek Economy

Kyriakos Mitsotakis also referred to the Economy on the occasion of JP MORGAN’s investment in a Greek company. “I also wanted to inform you that yesterday we had a very important development in the field of economy. We were visited by the CEO and Greek-born Jamie Damon, one of the largest banks in the world, JP MORGAN, who decided to make a very important and very large investment in our country, which I believe signals a practical vote of confidence. of the bank in the prospects of the Greek economy. Investing in a company of essentially self-made people proves the dynamism that exists today in this ecosystem of Greek start-ups and of course it is an investment that has benefited all employees of the company who have gained significant financial benefits through this process of stock options which has been instituted by this government and I hope many other young Greek companies have a similar course. This does not mean that in the field of economy, despite the rapid growth rates, we do not ignore the difficulties that exist. I know very well that the first concern of citizens today is accuracy. An imported precision, a result of inflationary pressures stemming from price increases in the energy market. However, the obligation of the government is the development that is being launched, to concern all Greek citizens, no one to be left behind and that is why the government will remain fully consistent in the policy of supporting the disposable income of all citizens to deal more effectively and this wave of accuracy which we hope will be temporary but no one can predict with absolute accuracy when it will end. And of course the disposable income of the citizens is supported in two ways, through the reduction of taxes which is a non-negotiable policy of this government, we have proved it and we will continue to follow this path, but also the increase of salaries because I want to repeat you and the commitment of the government on May 1, earlier than we had planned, to proceed to a not negligible, much larger, increase in the minimum wage compared to the one we have already implemented since January 1. I am still very optimistic about the medium-term prospects of the Greek economy and it is always positive when this optimism is reflected in the choices made by major foreign investors who to invest in Greece these funds means that they also trust the prospects of the Greek economy. otherwise they would obviously not proceed with such moves “, said Mr. Mitsotakis.

“On the issue of the Economy, as we know, Greek society faced great difficulties in a ten-year crisis and then with the pandemic, in addition to the significant losses in human lives, we have serious, very adverse consequences on the state of the economy. Therefore, any business move that is a vote of confidence in the Greek economy is welcome and hopeful, and as you said, I think not only about the state of the economy but about society as a whole. There I realize that we have startups, we have young people with new skills, the opportunities are given, that is, beyond entrepreneurship and the entry of capital into the country, which I do not underestimate at all, to give people the opportunity to develop their skills. Especially the new generation which has a lot to offer and is of course more affected by unemployment. Therefore, all this is in a positive direction, I would say “, said Ms. Sakellaropoulou.
