The secretaries of the Central Committee of SYRIZA-PS blamed Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the ND government for the deadly floods. Rania Svigou and George Vassiliadis, in the context of their visit to Volos, Killeler and Larissa.

In her statement, the secretary of the KE Rania Svigou said: “This is an unprecedented disaster, a national tragedy, for which Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the government of N.D., the regional governor for 12 years, are responsible. Because they had all the warnings from the scientists and did nothing, because help was slow to come. Because they didn’t do everything they should have done all the previous years. Kyriakos Mitsotakis should not think that he will hide from his responsibilities. This is a foretold tragedy. This is a crime. Kyriakos Mitsotakis is guilty.”

Deputy Secretary George Vassiliadis said: “Climate change cannot be the government’s only response to this unspeakable tragedy. The non-existence of the state, the non-existence of infrastructure, the big question marks hover over Thessaly as a whole. What happened from the 21st onwards, what happened to the flood defenses? Why were projects excluded, why is there not a single euro in the Recovery Fund to be able to shield the country and make Greece a normal European state? These are the big answers that the Greek people want.

And the Mitsotakis government, which is responsible for everything we are experiencing in these difficult days for the people of Thessaly, must respond and have the integrity to take on its responsibilities.”

“With our presence, we want to support the region, to support Thessaly. Because there is a lot of anxiety and we don’t want this anxiety to turn into anger and impasse. We are anxious for a strike to be made again because our country has the ability to strike. We will take the initiative to have a discussion about the next day of Thessaly in the Parliament at the central level” said the president of the KO of SYRIZA PS Sokratis Famellos from Larissa during a press conference he gave as part of the tour he made in the Thessalian city on the occasion of floods and disasters.

Mr. Famellos emphasized that the disaster is not over and that there is still an evolving risk that creates a civil protection issue, to emphasize that “the first risk is public health and access to the basic infrastructure of life”.

Among other things, he emphasized that there is a problem in several areas with dead animals, stagnant water, and waste, noting that public health measures are required. Spraying, removal of waste, dead animals, etc.

He also emphasized that there is a need to restore the health infrastructure, but also the problem with feeding and housing, while referring to the volunteers who participate and help the citizens.

At the same time, he accused the government of inadequacy for both the fires and the floods, saying that “the state failed to protect, evacuate and coordinate government services”.

Among other things, he said that this summer there was a refutation of the excellence and efficiency of Mr. Mitsotakis, noting that we would not be concerned if it did not have disastrous effects for the country and for the economy and for society. He also said that Mr. Mitsotakis is taking us steps back.

“It is not excellence that the country’s institutional obligations are not progressing, just as the adaptation plan to the climate crisis in the Region of Thessaly is not finished, nor is it excellence that the Ministry of Civil Protection does not have an organizational chart,” he stressed.

Mr Famellos also attacked the government regarding the staff state, saying that “it is not staff when there was no coordination, but also when the State disagrees with science”. He blamed the government, saying “we want the country to do better.”

Mr. Famellos said that there must be a plan for the recovery of Thessaly and that a very large part of the primary production of our country depends on Thessaly. “That’s why there should be along with the direct measures of survival and an intervention in the matter of compensations and the income of farmers and agricultural capital”, he noted.

He finally spoke about full performance of the deficit created by the disaster, saying that “it is important to get away from the old model of civil protection that has no staff, but also to proceed to a scientific planning of civil protection, but also to a recovery plan of the society of Thessaly”.
