He added that “we know very well that we are not only voting for a new president, but we are choosing a leadership that will take us to a Congress to decide on a new party and a new political proposal”.
“The debate between the candidates does indeed have moments that are not dialectical, i.e. it does not produce a political result. There are also positions with intensity, both executives and members, on social media. But these are very limited in front of the big picture. And the main political message is the 147,000 who came to the ballot box to elect a new leadership“, said the president of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA-PS, Sokratis Famellos, on the Open television station and on the show, “Hour of Greece”.
He added that the 147,000 members at the SYRIZA ballot box express the anxiety of the citizens for the next day and the search for a solution: “Search for a solution at the leadership level so that SYRIZA-PS can become stronger as the official opposition that will bring down the Mitsotakis government. Because people came to vote because their lives are not going well and to find solutions, not just for faces. And furthermore, he didn’t just come to vote for the faces but for the leadership of SYRIZA-PS, not any other party. For this reason, 40,000 new members signed up».
Regarding his own role, S.Famellos repeated: “You know that because of my position and my personality I am committed to a cause which is none other than to serve the Left and the interests of society and that I have no personal ambitions and pursuits. And the large participation gave us strength and responsibility because it exceeded all predictions».
He added that “we know very well that we are not only voting for a new president, but we are choosing a leadership that will take us to a Congress to decide on a new party and a new political proposal».
He also noted, in a related question from the journalists, that the interest surrounding the candidacy of Stefanos Kasselakis is not limited to personal interest in his characteristics but to interest in his candidacy for the position of president of SYRIZA PS and not of any other party.
He then pointed out that in SYRIZA-PS there are many executives who will participate in the formulation of our political proposal the next day: “The positive, generally appreciated, work we have done since the elections to date, the organization of the Permanent Congress and the elections and the work of our Parliamentary Group and its Bureau, show that collegiality and unity can be a strength for the next day . We managed to preserve our political capital and enrich it even after the defeat and the shocking departure of Alexis Tsipras”.
Answering a question about whether the next day will lead to a split or departures, he said: “In politics you can’t rule anything out, we’ve seen what has happened in the last three months, but you shouldn’t operate on assumptions either. Action matters. And the question is what are we doing for the interests of society and the country. For this reason, I prioritize unity and collectivity.”
Mr. Famellos admitted the responsibility of SYRIZA-PS that led to the negative result of the elections and noted that there are clearly deficits: “There are many issues that we have to solve the next day. For example, “commissioning” and documentation on central issues, which must be connected to society.”
When asked if he is in favor of holding a debate between the candidates for the leadership of SYRIZA-PS, he answered: “From the beginning I was in favor of the dialogue. A dialogue that must be held openly in society. This was the position I had taken when Nikos Pappas submitted a motion to hold a debate. But this issue does not concern the president of the Parliamentary Group but the candidates and I do not know if now there is time to organize it since it was not finally accepted before the first Sunday”.
Regarding whether he will remain president of the Parliamentary Group in the event of the election of Stefanos Kasselakis, S. Famellos said: “I insist that our strength is unity and collegiality. That means we should have a big turnout on Sunday. This is the message I want to send, for the citizens, its members, to come to the ballot box of SYRIZA-PS».
