Greece is a candidate for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council and if we are elected, our term will be filled with diplomacy, dialogue, democracy, said Mr Gerapetritis
Greece’s adherence to International Law as a founding member of the United Nations and the firm support of Ukraine in the war that Russia is waging against it, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, expressed in his intervention, in an open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Ukraine
In his deposition, Mr. Gerapetritis stated that “the security system, established by Map of the United Nations after World War II, it is based on a fundamental assumption: the prohibition of the use or threat of use of force.” and added that “the Security Council is the body entrusted with the ultimate responsibility for maintaining peace and security.”
“Yet today, unfortunately, the entire United Nations system is being seriously challenged by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Greece’s foreign policy, as a founding member of the United Nations, has always been determined by its adherence to International Law,” said Mr. Gerapetritis.
Among other things, the Minister of Foreign Affairs issued an invitation “Together with our partners in the EU, we call on all nations to make every effort to for the peaceful resolution of disputes to prevailwith full respect of International Law by all”.
“To this end, it is fundamental that all states respect international Treaties, which have defined the borders between states, as well as important UN Conventions, such as the Convention on the Law of the Sea,” said Mr. Gerapetritis.
Referring to the steadfast stance of the allies against the invasion launched by Russia, Mr. Gerapetritis stated that “Therefore, we have adopted a clear principled position on the Russian aggression from the beginning: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a clear violation of International Law and a serious threat to European security, as well as global peace and stability.”
“Greece, together with the other EU member states, will continue to provide support to Ukraine. At the same time, as far as accountability is concerned, we firmly believe that all alleged crimes committed in and against Ukraine should be thoroughly investigated.”
“A lasting and particularly important consequence of the Russian aggression against Ukraine is severe food insecurity in many vulnerable countries around the world. The UN Secretary-General is making efforts to revive the Black Sea Grains Initiative.
“However, Russia’s unfortunate withdrawal from this UN initiative has stalled exports. In addition, Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian ports have worsened security conditions in the Black Sea, making it impossible to export Ukrainian grain by sea.”
Regarding the issue of grain transportation, Mr. Gerapetritis said that “more than half of this grain was transported by Greek shipping companies. Many ships carried grain directly to countries that needed it most. Greece, a nation with a leading position in shipping, attaches great importance to freedom of navigation and maritime safety. In light of these developments, the European Union has decided to increase alternative routes for Ukraine’s grain exports.”
“In this context, together with the Baltic and Adriatic corridors” stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, “Greece offers Ukraine an alternative transport route to the Aegean Sea, making use of the ports of Northern Greece, in cooperation with our partners, Bulgaria and Romania.” he added.
In closing, Mr. Gerapetritis pointed out that “Greece is a candidate for a non-permanent member position in the United Nations Security Council for the period 2025-2026. If elected, our term will be informed by three core values. The words that render them are Greek and are used worldwide: Diplomacy, Dialogue, Democracy”.
“Diplomacy and Dialogue remain the only way to resolve disputes peacefully. But lasting stability and security cannot be maintained without Democracy. Ukrainians today are fighting for their right to live in a democratic society. Greece and the European Union stand by their side.”
