“Establishment of 17 stroke units, recruitment of 2,000 nurses and one and a half thousand doctors from 2024”
The central axis until the end of the year is the regeneration of the NHS with a law that will come to the Parliament, the Minister of Health Michalis Chrysochoidis told SKAI today.
He added that there will be an initiative to bring order to the emergency departments in the emergency rooms. (He said that by October all the statistical data will be available to see what can be done to staff the mechanism).
He also underlined that the next political issues concern the overall reorganization of the EKAB and the establishment of a network of 17 units for strokes which are a scourge for the country. As Mr. Chrysochoidis announced, in approximately 12 months all units will be operational and staffed, while in three months the first five units will be fully operational.
He also mentioned that by the end of the month a bill will come in order to have specialized trauma units.
The minister underlined that these days 2,000 nurses are being recruited, in a month another two thousand will be recruited to cover the needs in the hospitals, while another six to six and a half thousand doctors and nurses are expected to be recruited in the new year.
He also stated that a bill is being discussed in the Parliament that has a provision regarding hospital lists and the aim is to create a platform so that there is a common list to know how the people who are waiting a long time for surgery will be distributed in the hospitals.
Soon there will be solutions for the lists of surgeries, emphasized Mr. Chrysochoidis
Asked about the chronically ill who are standing in queues for their medicines, he announced that today a provision will be passed whereby the medicines will go, at public expense, to the homes or hospitals where they are being treated.
He said this would be applicable from 1-1-2024.
Mr. Chrysochoidis also announced that a model center for chemotherapy of women with breast cancer is being prepared in Elena Venizelou, with the contribution of large donations.
“Intervention for the new pandemic, dementia”
He also pointed out that there should be an intervention for the new pandemic that is dementia.
The minister underlined that the problem with medicines is global. In this context, he said, a mechanism is being created so that all agents will be online, there will be transparency and everyone will know which drugs are missing and which are in excess. It will then reach the consumer’s mobile phone, which will tell him which medicine is available or not.
He also stated that the goal is to interconnect the hospitals, one to complement the other and not to merge.
In the context of the regeneration of the NHS, he said that the new administrations will be selected based on competence and objective criteria, while there will be an evaluation.
