“Across the greater part of the Iberian Peninsula, temperatures on October 1 ranged from seven to 14 degrees above normal for this time of year,” said a spokesman for the National Meteorological Service.
The start of October this year in Spain was the warmest since records began, the National Meteorological Service (AEMET) announced today with almost 40% of weather stations recording maximum temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius.
The start of the autumn season has so far left Spaniards with little breathing room after a summer with four heatwaves that developed in a span of more than 24 days amid the observed global warming that scientists attribute to human activity .
“In most of the Iberian Peninsula, temperatures on October 1 ranged from seven to 14 degrees above normal for this time of the year,” said AEMET spokesman Ruben del Campo, adding that nearly 100 different records were set yesterday Sunday.
Two cities in south-central Spain – Badajoz and Montoro – set record high temperatures for mainland Spain in October at 38 and 38.2 degrees Celsius respectively.
The previous record was 37.5 points and was recorded in October 2014 in Marbella.
The weather station in Madrid’s iconic Retiro Park, which is more than 100 years old, equaled the record it had held since 1930 of 30 degrees Celsius.
“The footprint of climate change is manifested in the fact that such hot days are more frequent and more intense,” del Campo told state broadcaster TVE.
As he added, summers in the future will not only be hotter but also longer and will extend into the traditionally rainy and mild autumn.
