With a proposal to increase resources to combat the climate crisis and for immigration, the Prime Minister participates in the European Political Community Summit in Granada, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Specifically, Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced during today’s meeting Greece’s intention to request an additional 2.5 billion euros from the Solidarity Fund for the climate crisis as well as increased funds for immigration.

According to what SKAI reported in the main news bulletin, Athens wants resources both to manage immigration on its borders and also money to Turkey at a time when a negotiation between Greece, Turkey and Brussels is in progress on the management of immigration flows, in order for Ankara to reduce flows to Athens in exchange for more EU funding.

“I will again insist on the need to increase the budget of the European Union in the context of the upcoming review, so that more European resources are available to deal with such a critical issue that concerns the entire European Union” I also had the opportunity in Malta, in meeting of the countries of the European South, to repeat my indignation at the fact that the resources available today from the European Solidarity Fund for dealing with natural disasters are relatively limited” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis from Granada where he is.

Mitsotakis – Pashinian meeting

At the same time, Kyriakos Mitsotakis met today with the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili.

During the meeting between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Armenian counterpart, developments regarding Nagorno-Karabakh were discussed. The Prime Minister expressed Greece’s full support and solidarity to the Armenian people and reiterated Greece’s readiness to support Armenia, both bilaterally and within the EU.

Erdogan is absent from the Summit

However, the Turkish president, who was absent from the work of the Synod due to a diplomatic illness, did not attend as a sign of support for Azerbaijan on the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh. The Turkish president, who pleaded unwell, was seen at a political gathering, however, sparking scenarios of diplomatic illness, showing his displeasure at not being invited to the Nagorno-Karabakh dialogue table.

“It’s a shame that Azerbaijan is not here, it’s a shame that Turkey, the main ally of Azerbaijan, is not here, so we could not talk here about such a serious issue,” said the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

However, the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced despite the absences a doubling of funds for the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.
“We have already allocated 5.2 million euros. We are doubling this amount to 10.4 million euros,” he announced.

Tomorrow, at the informal European Council, key topics on the agenda will be immigration and EU enlargement.
