Under the shadow of the developments in Israel and the ongoing war in the region, with an unknown time horizon, the prime minister has called an emergency meeting for today at noon at 12 of the Governmental National Security Council (GNSC) under his chairmanship.
The main subject of the Council meeting is, according to information, the assessment of the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip as well as the possible consequences and effects in the wider region and in our country from the ongoing war and the escalation of hostilities.
The same information states that the KYSEA will also focus on planning for all possible scenarios that could affect our country, with first and foremost the visible risk of increasing migration flows to the west and therefore also to our country. as a gateway to the European Union.
After all, from the first moment of the new flare-up in Israel, all the involved and competent Greek authorities have been on standby to deal with such a phenomenon, closely monitoring the developments and adjusting their planning as the case may be, sounding the alarm in both maritime and land borders of the country.
The possibility of a new immigration wave to our country is made even stronger by the fact that according to the Minister of Immigration, Dimitris Kairides, an Israeli minister “asked to evacuate Gaza to Egypt. The Rafah crossing to the Sinai Peninsula remains closed and the last thing Al-Sisi wants in Cairo is a massive influx of Palestinian population,” a development that is estimated to divert migration flows in other directions, to the north.
The new situation that is taking shape makes even more critical and unregulated the possibility that members of Hamas will try to leave the area and in their “escape corridor” include Greece in their itinerary, as was observed to happen in the past with ISIS terrorists.
All these allowances will be put on the agenda of today’s KYSEA meeting, in which, under the chairmanship of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, they will participate
the head of GEETHA, Konstantinos Floros, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, the Minister of Citizen Protection, Yiannis Oikonomou, and the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Dimitris Kairides.
The situation in the Middle East was also the subject of the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew, where concern was also expressed about the Christian presence in the Holy Land and as Kyriakos Mitsotakis informed, the government has contacted the Israeli side to protect the Monastery of Agios Porphyrios in Gaza from strikes by the Israeli Armed Forces.
