“I want to emphasize my respect for the independence of the Albanian Judiciary, but Fredi Beleris has the right to be sworn in even if he is the mayor of Heimarra who is in custody,” the Prime Minister said, among other things, while attending the Summit of the Berlin Process
Strict message to Albania sent by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis from the Summit of the Berlin Process. “I want to emphasize my respect for the independence of the Albanian Judiciary, but Fredis Beleris has the right to be sworn in even if he is the pre-trial mayor of Heimarra,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, coming to the Synod. It is an inalienable right that derives from the Albanian constitutional order, he added.
The Prime Minister’s statement: “Greece firmly and unwaveringly supports the accession perspective of the Western Balkans. We are firm supporters of the need for the countries of the Western Balkans to join the European family, we recognize that it is a difficult road that requires the countries to make significant adjustments to the European acquis.
The one principle that is unshakable for Greece is respect for the rule of law, a respect that must be manifested in all aspects of the functioning of the organized state. Unfortunately, in the last months on this issue, our friend Albania has made significant concessions and I am referring in the case of the elected mayor of Heimarra, Freddy Beleris, who remains in custody for five months. I want to emphasize my respect for the independence of the Albanian Judiciary, but Fredi Beleris he has the right to swear at leastand the remanded mayor of Heimarra.
It is an inalienable right that derives from the Albanian constitutional order. A right fully compatible with the European rules of the rule of law. It is important that he is sworn in to remove this significant shadow that undoubtedly affects Greek-Albanian relations. The resolution of the issue is a necessary condition for Greece to take the next step and agree to start the process of negotiations between Albania and the EU. I hope and wish that this problem will be resolved in a spirit of cooperation and goodwill, without affects the relations between the two states”.
The Prime Minister was asked if he would discuss the matter with the Prime Minister of Albania Mr. Rama emphasized: “Our position on this matter is very clear: I have no intention, nor is it my business, to interfere in the proceedings of the independent Albanian Judiciary. However, Fredis Beleris has the right to swear, even if he remains in custody. I will make this absolutely clear to Edi Rama and I hope we can resolve this matter in a positive manner.”
Earlier the prime minister had a meeting with representatives of the Greek National Minority in Albania.
The meeting was attended by Vassilis Kayos, President of DEEEM-Omonoia, Vangelis Doules, Member of Parliament, President of KEAD, Thanasis Potsis, President of the Union of Vlachs of Albania and Silvia Bourbo, Member of the Board of Directors of Omonia and Municipal Councilor of the Municipality of Heimarra.
