The result of the second round of the elections is a victory for the citizens, the local government and the progressive spacesources say of SYRIZA.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his system are big losers. The local communities resented the arrogance of the rulers, they resisted and rejected brutal government blackmail, it is emphasized.

“We have a clear defeat of the Maximus system. The vast majority of persons and forms that Mitsotakis personally supported were defeated state by state” comments Koumoundourou.

The loss of the two largest Municipalities of the country and the Region of Thessaly constitutes strategic defeat of Mitsotakis. This is a personal defeat.

According to official opposition circles, “especially in the Region of Thessaly, the continuous visits of Stefanos Kasselakis and the support from the beginning in the person of Dimitris Kouretas were rewarded by the citizens”.

“The policy of SYRIZA – PS and Stefanos Kasselakis to support all progressive forms with political bravery and clarity bore fruit. The citizens approved the policy of SYRIZA-PS in favor of the cooperation of the progressive forces. It turned out that the cooperation of progressive forces where achieved worked multiplyingly to create a tremendous momentum that overwhelmed the forces of maintenance. The progressive social space remains a majority.

Nevertheless the prospect of necessary convergences and collaborations of progressive forces requires hard work, honesty and consistency. SYRIZA – PS does it” it is pointed out, but in Koumoundourou they add that “the point is for PASOK and the other forces of the progressive space to leave the short-sighted logic of party entrenchment and realize the stakes of the time”.

“Unfortunately, the first statements of Mr. Androulakis – in contrast to Mr. Papandreou who even belatedly put things on a proper footing – turned out to be lower than expected, showing arrogance. We are here. Consistent with our principles and values, we insist on the need for dialogue and convergence of progressive forces. Open and transparent. No underground dealings and haggling. Based on programs and principles. The responsibility now lies mainly with the leadership of PASOK. Let’s not go from blue to green arrogance.”

In SYRIZA, however, they clarify that “we are not celebrating. But today is a better day. It turned out that the Mitsotakis system is not invincible. The first major fissures in the system of familism and entanglement are a fact.”

“This is the first defeat of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and New Democracy and it will not be the last. The citizens showed that they can no longer tolerate the mockery of the government. A painful period ended on Sunday. The cycle of defeat is over. The progressive world of the country is regaining its lost confidence and hoping again. The self-governing partnership of the progressive forces dealt a decisive blow to the anti-SYRIZA front that had been formed in the previous years” party circles report.

“The citizens said no to the arbitrary decisions of mayors and regional governors. Decisions made in the absence of citizens, deeply conservative decisions.”

A negative point, however, they observe, of this electoral contest, the small number of women elected. Unfortunately no woman was elected regional governor in the 13 regions of the country and out of 322 municipalities only 22 will be headed by women.
