“Issues of national sovereignty cannot be the subject of the dialogue with Turkey”, stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Gerapetritis, answering in the Parliament to a topical question of the MP of the Spartans Alexandros Zerveas.

The Foreign Minister categorically stated that “there is no hidden or overt agreement with Turkey for the demilitarization of the islands as well as for any issue concerning the disposition of the Armed Forces in the country“, adding that “issues related to national sovereignty, such as that of the provision of the ED of the country cannot be the subject of any agreement».

Mr. Gerapetritis, underlined that “there is no issue of weakening the power of the Greek islands from the point of view of ED”. He referred the MP to what the Deputy Minister of National Defense Yiannis Kefalogiannis said the day before yesterday, answering another topical question in the Parliament, where he assured that “there is no reduction in our military power on our islands”.

Mr. Gerapetritis said that it is “it goes without saying that Greece maintains its rights deriving from international conventions – the Treaty of Lausanne, Montreux and Paris for its armor and defense».

The foreign minister said that “Greece is at the highest level of military and diplomatic power”.

Greece said Mr. Gerapetritis has acquired a very strong capital, since in the last four years it has strengthened the ED in terms of personnel and infrastructure, something that had not existed in previous decades, and on the other hand, diplomatically, Greece has built alliances that strengthen and shield its international position, it has developed an independent action at the diplomatic level, gaining significant diplomatic capital. For this, as the minister said, “by joining the discussions with Turkey – we are always in favor of dialogue on the basis of international law and the values of the UN Charter – we are in a position of real power».

The MP of the Spartans, Alexandros Zerveas, citing reports and statements, argued that we have entered into a dialogue with Turkey “which is a terrorist state”. He mentioned, among other things, that as “distinguished professors have also said, now is an opportunity to stop the dialogue with a state that favors terrorism”, “Turkey only understands from power”. He asked “to appeal to the Hamburg court which only deals with EEZs and not to The Hague which is a civil court”.

Mr. Zerveas called on the minister to answer if there is any secret agreement between the two governments for the partial demilitarization of the islands, asking “why we should get Turkey’s approval to station troops on our islands.”
