SYRIZA’s Head of Justice Yiannis Sarakiotis and Rural Development Vassilis Kokkalis submitted a report to the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office requesting an investigation into whether the Minister of Rural Development Lefteris Avgenakis and the outgoing regional governor of Thessaly Kostas Agorastos have committed the crime of voter fraud.

The occasion was the statements of Mr. Avgenakis and Agorastos during the week before the second vote for the regional elections, which the executives of SYRIZA complain that there was an attempt to deceive the voters of the Thessalian plain. With their report, they ask the prosecutors to investigate whether the crime of voter fraud by complicity and any other related crime has been committed.

As the SYRIZA MPs emphasize in their report, “the period from October 8, 2023 until the end of the planned election period in view of the holding of the second round of elections on October 15, 2023, acts and events took place which politically are absolutely reprehensible , at the same time they also need a criminal assessment as they direct the will of the electorate towards the selection of a combination or even a person, falsifying the formation of the free expression of popular opinion and consequently falsifying the election result itself”.

They make special reference to the statement of Lefteris Avgenakis on October 11, who, among other things, said that: “Given Sunday’s election, it is understandable that the result of the ballot box is inextricably linked to the speed and adherence to the timetables that we have just announced“, but also in the statement of Kostas Agorastos on the same day he had said, among other things, that “there must be continuity in this project, there should be no interruption”.
