Intervention for work on Vasilissa Sophia carried out by the new mayor of Athens Harry Doukasasking the current municipal authority “not to create fait accompli”.

Haris Doukas’ statement in more detail:

“The delivery of Vasilissa Olga to traffic was one of the key announcements of our program, which was approved just 9 days ago by the citizens of Athens.

The outgoing municipal authority cannot create fait accompli in a basic program announcement that received a vote of confidence from the citizens. Especially in a period of transition when we are trying at the self-governing level to create conditions of cooperation and trust.

To avoid misunderstandings, we reiterate our position for the creation of smooth traffic conditions in Vasilissis Olgas, without under any circumstances abandoning our vision for sustainable mobility in Athens and the integration of public and green spaces.

We want to emphasize that the closure of Vasilissis Olga 3 years ago divided the center of Athens in two, caused heavy traffic congestion, did not remove cars from the center, increased air pollution and continues to inconvenience thousands of drivers every day.

Our goal is to reduce the traffic burden in the city, taking into account at every moment the impact on the daily life of citizens.

I call on the outgoing municipal authority to respect the will of the people of Athens and not proceed with actions that create fait accompli”.
