The election of Christos Sartzetakis to the Presidency of the Republic in 1985 took place on the proposal of the then Prime Minister and President of PASOK, Andreas Papandreou.
Papandreou’s proposal had come as a big surprise in those days, as the press at the time wanted the then prime minister to have pledged to nominate Konstantinos Karamanlis for a second term in office.
Papandreou’s move had provoked strong reactions from the New Democracy side.
There were reactions to two more issues of a constitutional nature. The first was the infamous blue ballots and the second was the disagreement that erupted over whether the Speaker of Parliament, Giannis Alevras, who was acting President of the Republic after the early resignation of Karamanlis, had the right to vote.
For the vote, the governing majority had called for the use of different colored ballots for each candidate, something that the then official opposition (New Democracy) denounced as an attempt to invalidate the secret nature of the ballot, because, as he claimed, the color of each ballot was the translucent folder.
The ballot papers used for Sartzetaki’s candidacy were blue.
Finally, Christos Sartzetakis was elected in the third ballot with the votes of PASOK and KKE
The term of office lasted until 5 May 1990.
After 1990 he had largely retired from public life.
