Erdogan is attempting to restore his own view of a new hegemonic role for Turkey in the region, said Dimitris Avramopoulos speaking to SKAI and on the show Kalimera with Giorgos Autias.

He added that we should not forget that at the moment there is a big confrontation going on inside Turkey between the Kemalists and Erdogan.

He emphasized that the Greek-Turkish approach should clearly not be affected by the latest developments and explained that at this moment new spheres of influence are being formed on a global scale.

Mr. Avramopoulos called Erdoğan’s collusion with Putin, who at the moment wants to forget the war in Ukraine, while on the other hand there is also Iran, as worrying.

“Iran, Turkey and Russia have cooperated at this moment in front of the big problem of dealing with the crisis in the Middle East” said Mr. Avramopoulos and added that despite the developments, the USA has selective relations with Turkey, but at the same time it is also present in Eastern Mediterranean for the possible involvement of Hezbollah.

At the moment the tension in the Middle East is at its peak, he said and added that clearly Israel has the right to protect itself, but on the other hand it is being given the message that it should pull back a little, because there is a risk that world public opinion will change.

“Of course Israel is right to protect itself, but an escalation could lead to something worse in the region. We may have a unification of the Arab world regardless of what their leaders want,” he said and emphasized that new poles of influence are being created.

In closing, he said that Israel must now accept the establishment of a Palestinian state, while he reiterated that Greece is on the right side of the facts.
