The government’s interventions to address it are oriented on three fronts fan violenceafter the brutal murder of 19-year-old Alkis in Thessaloniki.
At the Maximos Palace, an alarm was sounded after the new incident that caused shock throughout the country. On Monday morning, the Prime Minister convened an extraordinary meeting with the participation of the Ministers of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakou and Justice, Costas Tsiaras and the Deputy Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis.
The initiatives decided at the meeting announced a little later by the government representative, Giannis Oikonomou.
As Mr. Economou said, the initiatives that will be taken will move at three levels:
1. to further tighten the institutional framework regarding the operation of the Fan Clubs and their branches,
2. the necessary adaptations of the Penal Code and
3. the intensification of controls by the Hellenic Post
At the same time, changes will be made in the way of administration of the Hellenic Football Federation.
Legislative interventions will be included in the sports bill that will be submitted to Parliament in the coming weeks.
Mr. Oikonomou pointed out that with the initiatives taken by this government in the last two years, the police were able to immediately investigate the case and make arrests.
“The government will continue in this direction and we expect everyone to assist the Greek State in the effort to eliminate sports violence. “After all, this is an issue that unites us all.”
He also pointed out that “the prime minister’s firm will is to continue the practical effort, without loud announcements, in order to lead to an even greater reduction of the phenomena of violence”.
In this context, the police proceeded yesterday to a new round of checks on fan associations in Ilioupoli, Agios Dimitrios and Peristeri.
