The visit of the president of Turkey is a positive step Tayyip Erdogan in Athens Anagnostopoulou CoMember of Parliament of the New Left and responsible for foreign policy.

“We consider it self-evident that the government will immediately inform the parliament and political leaders about the results of today’s visit,” he emphasizes.

The recession and the dialogue between Greece and Turkey should not remain in a situational context, points out the MP of the New Left.

The statement of Sia Anagnostopoulou in detail

“President Erdoğan’s visit to Athens today, the signing of the Athens Declaration on Friendship and Good Neighborly Relations and the progress made mainly on the issues of “low politics” in the context of the reactivation of the Greece-Turkey High Cooperation Council, is a positive step , which we welcome.

As the New Left, since our creation we have pointed out our intention to practice politics based on principles and values, among which the peaceful coexistence of peoples and international cooperation, always on the basis of international law, are at the top of the list.

The recession and the dialogue between Greece and Turkey should not, however, remain in a situational context. Our country must draw up a clear and autonomous strategy, always within the framework of its given alliances and with absolute protection of its sovereignty and sovereign rights. A multi-level strategy – bilateral, regional, European and international – that will lead, through concrete steps, to refer the delimitation of the continental shelf and EEZ to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, as the resolution of this dispute can guarantee a long-term and sustainable peace and stability in the region.

In the context of this strategy, we consider it self-evident that Greek-Turkish relations are an integral part of Euro-Turkish relations. These include the resolution of the Cyprus issue, based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council, with the creation of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality.

Asylum and Immigration policy is also included, respecting the individual rights of applicants and international law. For this reason, moreover, we will seek a series of contacts with both the Cypriot and the European Left in the coming period, where these issues will be discussed, among others.

For our part, we are absolutely clear: We are in favor of peace, stability and the promotion of democracy and human rights. In our region, these goals are served only by the normalization of relations and friendship between Greece and Turkey. In this direction, we will support every positive initiative, as long as it respects sovereignty and sovereign rights and promotes the country’s national interests and strategic goals.

Finally, we consider it self-evident that the government will immediately inform parliament and political leaders about the results of today’s visit and the road map for the future, in the context of the necessary institutional debate on foreign policy in the context of a modern democratic country”.
