Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is going to Brussels today to participate in the EU-Western Balkans Summit and tomorrow and the day after tomorrow in the European Council Summit.

The Prime Minister will tonight participate in the working dinner in the framework of the EU-Western Balkans Summit.

Government sources report that Greece’s permanent position is to support the European perspective of the Western Balkansas an investment in the stability, development and prosperity of the region.

This of course – they add – under the well-known conditionality, i.e. if the candidate countries fulfill the conditions and implement the required reforms.

They state that this is a difficult and painful process that depends on the same performance of the candidate countries. And, in any case, a basic prerequisite is the respect of the fundamental European values ​​and the reforms concerning the rule of law and especially the protection of human rights, including the rights of minorities.

As far as Albania’s accession process is concerned, Greece’s position is clear and has been explained to the Albanian side. Greece will not consent to the accession process if there is no progress on the issue of the elected mayor of Chiemarra Fredis Beleris.

Greece agreed to the sending of the EU’s letter to Tirana for the first step to start the negotiations, on the condition, however, that by the next stage of the process there will be a clear move for F. Beleris to assume duties and become respect his right to a fair trial, as well as the presumption of innocence. Otherwise, Greece is not going to consent to the next stages of the accession process.
