“The loss of Giorgos Michalakopoulos, who left us after a six-decade meteoric career on stage and screen, leaves an unfillable void in the field of Art”, says in a statement Minister of Culture Lina Mendonion the occasion of the death of the great Greek actor Giorgos Michalakopoulos, who passed away at the age of 85.

As Ms. Mendoni said, “Yorgos Michalakopoulos has blazed a meteoric path, making the most of his original gift and his instantly recognizable, unique means of expression. His trajectory in Art was exemplary. He not only gave us reference performances, he also bequeathed us a model of a complete artist, a beacon for the generations to come.”

“The naturalness with which he embodied dozens of roles of the classical and contemporary repertoire often misled us, as Giorgos Michalakopoulos was a deeply cultured man and a tireless worker of the theater, with dedication and constant struggle with the text, but also dedication to exhaustive processing and perfecting his stage techniques,” he added.

Also, the Minister of Culture noted: “He mainly healed the theater, but his selective passages from the big and small screen remain unforgettable. In particular, his participation in the 1970s, together with Vassilis Diamantopoulos and in texts by Kostas Mousrelas and directed by Kostas Koutsomytis, in the series “He and That” gave the public a breath of hope, with its corrosive indirect criticism of the Junta. He himself was, after all, an active citizen, who dealt with the public at the level of local self-government and trade unions and never avoided sharp public intervention”.

“Yorgos Michalakopoulos was fortunate, despite the anxieties, pain and insecurities that accompany the path of the actor, as he said himself, to win early on the praise of his fellow artists and the admiration of the public. He remained, however, until the end a deeply philosophical and sensitive man, with his dedication to Art going hand in hand with the conscience of the restless citizen.
To his wife Athena, his companion on the board and in life, to their daughters and to his countless friends, I extend my deepest condolences,” Ms. Mendoni concluded by saying.
