“Greek universities can achieve much more with the flagship of the Greek public university, but solving this historical educational misspelling. Now, we are the only country in the world that cannot establish non-state universities. There are 18,000 Greeks studying in Cyprus,” Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis told SKAI and the show “Kalimera” with George Autias.

As Mr. Pierrakakis said, “one parameter is that 40 thousand Greek children study abroad every year. This number must be able to be reduced because if we put it next to the number of Spanish, British or Portuguese, Greece cannot have more students abroad than England. Why should Greece not be a Regional Education Center? Why can’t they from the Balkans come to Greece to study?”

He also pointed out that “we are talking about non-state, non-profit universities. The goal is to achieve the best educational environment. We want major foreign universities abroadto be able to come and assist the higher education system of our country. The criteria will be the strictest that exist in the EU. I also invite the opposition parties to enter into a dialogue of criteria, to do some things together. In Cyprus, the corresponding framework was voted by all political parties”.

The Minister of Education clarified, however, that “there will be cuts in the examination of applications, while he emphasized that the regime for colleges is not changing. It will provide full professional and academic rights and will be the degree of the parent university abroad”, .

“60 million will be given to support public universities,” he added.
