According to government sources, the climate that has developed over the last period, regarding this burning social issue, was not liked by Maximos Palace, which, as the prime minister hinted, will be the one that will define the rules of the debate.

“Brake” in the scenarios for speeding up the passage of the bill for the marriage of same-sex couplesput the Kyriakos Mitsotakis speaking to journalists after the swearing in of the new Ministers at the Presidential Palace. “Don’t put the cart before the horse. First we’ll explain what we want to do and then we’ll talk about a schedule.” said the prime minister, canceling rumors and scenarios that wanted the procedures to be expedited even until February.
The climate that has developed over the last period, regarding this burning social issue and which has escalated in recent days, between supporters and critics of the legislative regulation, according to government sources, did not like the Megaros Maximos which, as he let it be meaning the prime minister, he will be the one who will define the rules of the debate and its evolution.
After all, from the first moment when the government’s intention to legislate for same-sex couples came to light, through the mouth of the prime minister himself and his commitment to resolve it within four years, no room was left for the opposite and “retreat” ». On the contrary, at every opportunity, both government sources and the government representative, whenever they were called to answer, assured about the legislative initiative, referring, however, for the time to Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself.
The prevailing atmosphere both inside the blue faction and even in the Council of Ministers, as well as the recording of the social reactions to the issue, as reflected in the opinion polls, sent the message to Herod of Atticus that the time has not yet arrived and the conditions have not ripened as they should. As a result, any thought of speeding up procedures and immediate passage of the bill for same-sex couples is frozen for the time being. Not in terms of substance and legislation, but in terms of when these will be promoted. Besides, the prime minister himself has repeated from time to time that “What I have said pre-election and post-election is valid in its entirety. It is an issue that within this four-year period, this government will resolve.”
Although government sources insist that “Greek society is much more ready and mature”, the reservations that have been expressed from time to time and intensified recently, have led to the conclusion that the discussion must become more detailed. To focus, on the one hand, on the fact that this is a reality of Greek society, to which the state and the legislative authority cannot “turn a blind eye” and on the other hand, acknowledge objections and reservations which are formulated either by part of society, or by the Church, or by a portion of blue-collar executives and from that they are determined to thoroughly and thoroughly discuss every aspect that concerns and divides, and to remove as many misgivings as possible.
In the scale of the reactions, the internal party reservations in the blue faction have a special weight. The government representative speaking on SKAI TV and expressing his personal opinion – as he said – he sent a clear message to his colleague, the Council of Ministers, stating that “when you belong to a government it is good to support legislative initiatives” while the will of Megaros Maximos is steadfast that they themselves MPs and Ministers must be aware of the government’s initiatives. Consequently, in this context too, the fermentations will be intensified, while the details of the regulation will play a special role, which is estimated to determine the final position.
Party discipline, however, is considered a given that it will not be imposed on the members of the parliamentary group, however it is also a given that the Maximos Palace wants the contested legislative initiative to be passed with the largest possible majority, regardless of the positive votes expected to be given by SYRIZA and PASOK .
