The 3rd Regional Seminar on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals for the Geopolitical Group 12+ of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Paris was attended by Stavros Kalafatis

“Greece implements a coherent policy in 3 pillars to promote sustainable development and environmental protection: Transition to climate neutrality. Promoting the circular economy. Protection of the natural environment. We are growing our economy while reducing carbon emissions.

In total, our emissions have decreased by 43% as we increasingly turn to renewable energy”, emphasized the General Secretary of K.O. of the New Democracy MP of Thessaloniki, member of the Greek parliamentary delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and member of the Special Standing Committee for Environmental Protection, Stavros Kalafatis, in an intervention on the Green Transition in Greece, at the 3rd Regional Seminar on Achieving Sustainable Development Goals Development for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Geopolitical Group 12+, held in Paris.

As Mr. Kalafatis pointed out: “In the National Climate Law, adopted last year, we set ambitious goals for 2030 and 2040.

Based on the National Energy and Climate Plan, Greece will exceed the target set by European legislation. By 2030, 80% of our electricity will be produced from renewable energy sources, the penetration of which has reached 50%.

Last year wind and solar penetration was the 7th highest globally and our generation capacity the 5th highest on a per capita basis.”

Referring to the circular economy, the General Secretary of K.O. of New Democracy, underlined that “the new National Action Plan for the Circular Economy sets concrete actions for all parties involved until 2025, with an emphasis on the drastic reduction of single-use plastics”.

Regarding biodiversity, Stavros Kalafatis underlined that “Greece has decided as early as 2021 to declare 10% of Greek territorial waters a no-fishing zone by 2030. In addition, it has committed to restore 30% of special types of marine habitats by 2030”.

In the context of the third regional seminar of the IPU, the General Secretary of K.O. of N.D. he had meetings with his fellow MPs from Austria and the Netherlands whom he informed about the progress Greece has made in the matter of the Green Transition.
