2024 will be a very good year for the economy, stressed the Prime Minister, estimating that Greece will attract more foreign investments. “What we need to do is continue to generate a surplus with sustainable growth, that is possible,” he said.
2024 will be a very good year for the Greek economy, which is growing faster than the average of the eurozone countries, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said speaking from Davos to Bloomberg TV and journalist Francine Lacqua.
He added that due to the positive image, Greece will attract more foreign investments, adding that if we look at Greek spreads and bonds we will understand that the country is in a better position.
The Greek Prime Minister explained that there are also concerns such as the increased cost of living, however he added that he is optimistic and predicted that “we are facing a long-term development cycle”.
“What we need to continue to do is run healthy primary surpluses, reduce debt and continue to grow,” he said.
Mr. Mitsotakis noted that we improved the country’s image abroad because in the past it was negative. “Today we have a prosperous economy,” he added.
Regarding the sale of 30% of “Eleftherios Venizelos” airport, he replied that “this will be done in the first months of 2024. We have also sold shares from our banks, a significant part of Piraeus Bank will also be sold. But I also see new registrations on the Athens Stock Exchange. Athens is a year-round destination. We target high income markets. But what is built must be sustainable.”
Regarding the banks in particular, the prime minister noted that “you should expect news about Piraeus Bank soon. Last year Eurobank was fully privatized and the developments at National Bank were successful. It will be a significant percentage of Piraeus Bank”.
Bill for same-sex couples
For the bill on same-sex couples he declared sure that it will pass the Parliament.
“It was part of our program and will be discussed at Cabinet next week. I am optimistic that it will become state law the first two weeks of February. These are important issues to many people, which is why I did not impose party discipline. It shouldn’t divide society, that’s why we have a healthy dialogue. But the rights of children that already exist must be protected. And I think it will be voted by Parliament. We have made equality our top priority. But to do that you have to have a growing economy,” he said.
Returning to the issue of the economy, he said that we managed to create fiscal space to help the most vulnerable Greeks.
There is an issue of accuracy in Greece and we want to support mainly young families with children in relation to the issue of demographics.
It is a priority for us how we will support families, those who rent houses and expect measures to be announced soon to support them.
For the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine he said: “We are in the Eastern Mediterranean, we are a pillar of stability in a troubled region. There is concern about geopolitical developments and we are doing our best not to spread the conflict in the Middle East. And I estimate that at the European Council in February we will approve the 50 billion for Ukraine. But together with the review for the European budget, because we need more funds for immigration and natural disasters.”
