“Since parties representing more than 230 MPs have positioned themselves positively in favor of the vote of Greeks abroad through postal voting, why not also in the national elections?” sources in the ministry say
The filing of the amendment establishing the postal vote for Greek citizens living abroadnot only in the European elections and referenda, but also in national elections, answers the self-evident question expressed unanimously by the bodies of the diaspora “Since parties representing more than 230 MPs have positioned themselves positively in favor of the vote of Greeks abroad through postal voting, why not also in the national elections?” sources of the Ministry of the Interior report regarding the relevant reactions noted by the opposition.
To the question, why is this particular amendment coming now, the answer is that last week an unprecedented historical consensus was formed in the postal vote for Greeks abroad in the European elections, which demonstrates that our political system has shown due maturity and seemed able to consent in the implementation of the letter measure for Greeks abroad and in the national elections. So since this historic consensus, honored by the Parliament, has become clear, the natural continuation was the self-evident extension of postal voting for Greeks abroad in national elections as well. “And this is the whole richness of the parliamentary dialogue, to improve bills as a result of a process that leads to consents. Alas if the bills are passed verbatim as they are tabled at the beginning of a procedure” note the same sources.
As stated by the Ministry of the Interior, this particular amendment was tabled at the beginning of a three-day meeting of the Plenary, in order to have sufficient time to discuss it, noting that the Plenary can last as long as needed.
“The debate on the facilitation of the right to exercise the right to vote by Greeks abroad has been debated in the Parliament for the last 50 years. Let’s not let another 50 years pass. Our country has only to gain from the further strengthening of its ties with the Greek diaspora” they conclude.
