“The reunification of our country on the basis of a just solution to the Cyprus issue remains a top priority. A solution that will make our country a real and independent state. A state of peace, prosperity and security for all its citizens, regardless of its citizens, which reunites our country, freeing it from any troops, occupying or otherwise, invading rights or dependencies from third countries “, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis.
During his greeting at the Feast of St. Maron, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, Mr. Anastasiadis spoke about the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem, which will be fully compatible with the Resolutions, the occasional Resolutions of the United Nations and of the Security Council, as well as the principles and values of the European Union.
“I express this political will and will in every direction in every international step, emphasizing our strong determination and will to work to give a sense of security to the entire Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Latinos and Armenians.” the Cypriot President and stressed:
“In every way we want to get the message across Cyprus is no less European than the rest of European countries where there is a multicultural presence, and as is the case in Cyprus, the human rights of every Cypriot citizen are indiscriminately guaranteed.
To date, we have provided important evidence of our determination and sincere will that there be no sense of insecurity for either the Turkish Cypriots or the Greek Cypriots. We have accepted decentralization of power to make them feel secure that no one will interfere in their daily lives that may concern them.
We have accepted political equality under conditions, however, that will not allow either community to dominate the other.
We have reached through the talks regarding the composition and operation of the legislature, the judiciary, the composition of the executive. What was left was the security of the Greek Cypriots. The feeling that he will not be under the influence of a third country.
And I want to say by the way that I do not see why Turkey should insist, a country so extensive in maintaining occupation on a small island, in a small state. It is for the benefit of Turkey, through the solution of the Cyprus problem that will be fully compatible with the international law and the European acquis, for the benefit of both the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots, but also for itself, its relations with Europe will be normalized, the conditions for the exploitation of natural wealth as well as will give the opportunity for peace to prevail throughout the region.
The example of Cyprus, the Republic of Cyprus which has excellent relations with all neighboring countries, which has peacefully settled the matters concerning the Exclusive Economic Zone, can be an example and an indication of what it means to finally resolve the Cyprus problem peacefully.
That is why I call on both the Turkish Cypriot leader, but especially those in power in Turkey today, to stop unilateral, illegal actions, to stop intervening in the EEZ of Cyprus, to stop intervening in Famagusta, to stop violate the ceasefire line, to finally respect what they are seeking, to stop having aspirations of usurpation of Greek Cypriot or Maronite properties.
What I want to send as a message, and it was a proposal that we have revived and are moving in every direction, in the US, in the UN, in the EU, are essentially Confidence Building Measures. They are not made to deceive, as Mr. Tatar claims. What is the deception, really, in a proposal that wants the implementation of the UN resolutions on Varosia, which wants to lift the alleged isolation of the Turkish Cypriots with the operation of the airport of Tympos under the UN administration, what deception may they contain? proposals that include the operation of the port of Famagusta or how compatible with international law will it be to allow Cypriot-flagged ships to approach Turkish ports or planes flying over Turkish airspace?
I have repeatedly said that the solution of the Cyprus problem will significantly contribute to the re-evaluation of the entire energy program, so that Turkey’s aspirations or plans, visions of Turkey are not ignored, to have a say and a role in terms of possible transit or participation processes for the exploitation of natural wealth. As long as the international law of the sea is observed, as long as they respect the EEZ of the neighboring states.
I have expanded, I felt the need to speak, to confess to you about the intentions, about the will, about the determination. I am going through the last year of my government and I want with all my efforts, with every means to see that the vision, as I had specified in 2013, can still be realized “.
After the operation, in his statements to the media and when asked if we are changing the policy from the sanctions sought in confidence-building measures, Mr. Anastasiadis said that “the sanctions remain in the technical committee which will work on them further, but at the same time as a sign of a positive step in our effort to create the appropriate and positive climate, is the implementation on the one hand of the CEBs we propose but of course on the other hand to stop Turkey acting in the illegal way it acts either in terms of the violation of the status of Famagusta, the EEZ of Cyprus, but also the recent events that show, unfortunately, an obsession with intransigence, but also with the creation of new accomplishments “.
Asked to comment that Mr. Tatar rejects Mr. Anastasiadis’ proposal on the issue, especially Famagusta, and when asked if there are any thoughts on how the government can promote the issue, the Cypriot President said that “we have already informed UN Secretary-General’s intention and proposals have been conveyed to the US Government by the Secretary of State at a recent meeting in the United States, The Minister of Foreign Affairs forwarded it to the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell. I have also informed John Kerry in his capacity as an envoy of the US President and former Secretary of State, and at the same time next week I will have a meeting with the French President – unfortunately due to the busy schedule it was not possible the day before yesterday the meeting. “Of course I will seek a meeting with the German chancellor.”
Asked if a new letter was sent to the UN Secretary General, N. Anastasiadis said that “the proposal was transmitted through the UN, which, I remind you, was also submitted on December 31, 2020”.
