Extraordinary EU leaders’ teleconference: Attack on Ukraine will come at a high cost to Russia

An aggressive action on the part of Russia in Ukraine will had serious consequences at great cost European leaders reiterated on Monday in an extraordinary teleconference chaired by European Council President Charles Michel in which Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated.

During the teleconference, the need for coordination between the Member States of the European Union and better preparation in case of escalation of the crisis was stressed. The need to maintain European unity and exhaustion was also stressed all diplomatic means and communication channels in order to avoid escalation.

European leaders have agreed to stay in touch on Ukraine.

German Chancellor Olaf Soltz asked Moscow “Immediate de-escalation moves” in the conflict over Ukraine, before visiting Kiev and then the Russian capital at a time when tensions in Russia’s relations with the West are at their peak.

Meanwhile, UK Undersecretary of Defense James Hippie said Monday morning that the British government was “taking very seriously” US assessments of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine as early as Wednesday. As he commented, “I am afraid we are closer to a war than we have been on this continent for 70 years.”
