With the phrase that the government will scrape the bottom of the barrel to exhaust any scope for further support for farmers, Kyriakos Mitstakis gives the stamp of his intentions ahead of the crucial meeting with the representatives of the buyers the day after tomorrow.

In any case, the government is committed to doing everything it can to support the primary sector, so the day after tomorrow at Megaros Maximos, an attempt will be made to find a solution in an extremely demanding balance exercise between “we want more or we proceed to a generalized blockade of the roads” and of “we will scrape the bottom of the barrel but the fiscal margins are not inexhaustible.

In any case, the prime minister’s “counterweight” to the agricultural blocs is expected to be the return of the 82 million euros of excise tax on agricultural oil.

According to information from SKAI, however, the refund will be made in a few installments with the first being given as quickly as possible.

In addition, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will have “in his quiver” an additional targeted intervention for the affected farmers of Thessaly which will involve a greater reduction in the price of electricity per kilowatt.

The same information summarizes that this intervention will not be covered by the state budget but by other sources that have already been investigated and identified by the financial staff.

Of course, on the agenda, as the Prime Minister has already foreseen, there are medium-to-long-term measures that will be related to the modification of the common agricultural policy to make the “green transition” more gentle, but also the acceleration of projects to facilitate the daily life of farmers and breeders.

As it seems, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is ready to commit before the fifteen-member committee of the agricultural blocs that if the execution of the budget is what it should be, there will be other measures, always in the context of social justice.

Government officials emphasize that if the dialogue moves in the context of realism, honesty and moderation then it will be possible to find common ground.
