“If he really feels and declares himself innocent, then why doesn’t he consent to the formation of a preliminary investigation committee and to be checked? Why does he not consent to the removal of his parliamentary immunity and to be tried by his natural judges, like all other Greek citizens?” said Vassilis Kokkalis, member of the investigation committee and member of parliament for Larisa of SYRIZA-PS
“The former Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Costas Karamanlis, appeared at the commission of inquiry as another Pontius Pilate and washed his hands of the responsibilities he bears for the deadly crime of Tempe” the member of the commission of inquiry and MP of Larissa emphasizes in his statement of SYRIZA-PS Vassilis Kokkalis.
He even adds the following: “Playing with the letter of the law, he explained to us that so many human lives were lost due to human error, leaving himself outside of his own obvious responsibilities. Earlier, he had been quick to do the black and white too, paraphrasing even the long-standing warnings of the workers about the serious safety hazards of the railway! But if he really feels and declares himself innocent, then why does he not consent to the formation of a preliminary investigation committee and to be checked? Why does he not consent to the removal of his parliamentary immunity and to be tried by his native judges, like all other Greek citizens?
His whole conduct is a clear admission of guilt in the conscience of public opinion. So he may be hiding behind his parliamentary immunity and the powerful regime of the Mitsotakis government which hastened to “bury” every element and every responsibility for this crime. He can be “exonerated” by his political allies. For society and for history, however, he has been “condemned” for this national tragedy. We will remember him as the politician without the “political pants”.
