In an electrified atmosphere, the bill for the changes proposed by the governing majority is being debated in the plenary today in the criminal codeswith the president of the K.O of SYRIZA, Socrates Famello, to blame the ND that “as a measure of hypocrisy, he brings here a bill to talk to us about justice, while the world is looking for its right”.
Sokratis Famellos attacked the Minister of Justice, arguing that it is “a cheap show by Mr. Floridis”. “The right cannot talk to us about order and security. All you are doing is injustice and impoverishment,” she pointed out, stressing that “the only goal is to set up an image. Do the extreme right wing of the SW a favor. When rights are circumscribed, ND’s K.O. is reinforced concrete”.
The Minister of Justice took up the gauntlet, going straight attack on SYRIZA, with Mr. Floridis commenting that “you were led to defeat in 2019, to a crash in 2023, to disintegration and now to dissolution. But you remain immovable in the position you express throughout time.’ “Let me remind you that you have governed as SYRIZA and not as a bad hologram of SYRIZA”, underlined the Minister, recalling that in 2015, the citizens who voted for him expected the abolition of the memorandums with an article, however the first law brought by SYRIZA then, it was “the release of serious crime in Greece. The second was the closing of the banks.” “You brought the famous Paraskevopoulos law (…) you brought out murderers, robbers, rapists, drug dealers. The Paraskevopoulos Law by which dozens are released from prison until 2019 has led all criminals to return to crime. You got them out of jail they came back and you wonder why crime increased. Crime has increased by your laws.’ He even referred to 2019, pointing out that before Parliament closed for the national elections, the SYRIZA government acquitted “all the heavy economic crimes of the country”. “So have no doubt that dissolution is near. Not because the Left is a mother to them, but because the Greek people are leading you to disintegration”, commented the Minister emphatically.
Theofilos Xanthopoulos took the floor on behalf of SYRIZA, arguing that the first law brought by Koumoundourou was for the humanitarian crisis. “The Paraskevopoulos law did not release drug dealers, Mr. Athanasiou had taken care of that in 2014. You are lying or you are wrong.” In fact, he emphasized that the criminal code of 2019 was a “legislation of more than ten years of effort”, which the ND turned into “rag paper”.
He also took the floor the parliamentary representative of PASOK, Dimitris Manzos, commenting that “it is sad that Mr. Floridis indulges in the bidding of criminal populism and ideology against the extreme right”. As he argued, the way the Minister of Justice has chosen to support the draft law, “by discrediting the opposing opinion and demonizing the other point of view”, proves that “the so-called liberal ND is already clearly winning over the extreme right”.
