Tsipras – Payat meeting with Ukraine and Turkey in focus

by

The president of SYRIZA-PS, Alexis Tsipras, had a meeting with the US Ambassador to Greece, Jeffrey Payat.

They talked about bilateral relations, developments in Ukraine and Turkey’s recent challenges.

According to a statement from the official opposition, Mr. Tsipras stressed the support of SYRIZA-PS in any initiative for peace in Ukraine, in the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country and in the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.

He stressed that “in the medium term, the goal should be to establish a pan-European security and armaments architecture that includes Russia, based on the principles of the OSCE and the European Security Charter.”

At the same time, he stressed his support for the further promotion of the Strategic Dialogue for Greek-American relations on a mutually beneficial basis.

Mr. Tsipras “reiterated the disagreement of SYRIZA-PS with the revision of the Greek-American defense agreement, as it is not carried out on a mutually beneficial basis and weakens the role of Greece as a pillar of peace and stability in the region.”

Finally, he stressed “the importance of US pressure on Turkey to put an end to provocative statements and violations and to proceed with substantial recession negotiations, with a view to demarcating the continental shelf-EEZ in The Hague.”
