The Greek Justice and the independent Authority for the Protection of Personal Data must investigate the case in depth, said Mr. Haritsis
In his meeting with the president of the Protection Authority, Alexis Haritsis expressed his strong concern about the revelations and complaints regarding the mass sending of emails of a pre-election nature, by the ND MEP Anna-Michel Asimakopoulou, to citizens registered in the electoral rolls abroad. Personal Data, Konstantinos Menudakos.
The president of the KO of the New Left emphasized in his statements after the meeting that “Ms. Asimakopoulou had no legal way to have the personal information of the voters in her possession without their prior consent”.
He posed two questions to the government: “firstly, can it ensure that citizens’ personal data is not used without their consent and consent in targeted political campaigns that lead to political manipulation? Secondly, can he ensure that the electoral process of the European elections, in which the postal vote is now also provided for, will be conducted in an impartial and transparent manner?’ Mr. Haritsis commented that the questions “are rather rhetorical”, “because the government will either tell us that everything is well done or that once again it will shed “abundant light” like what we saw in the wiretapping and the crime in Tempi ».
He emphasized that “the Greek Justice and the independent Authority for the Protection of Personal Data must investigate the case in depth” and that Mr. Menudakos informed him that the audit process has already begun. “We demand from the government to fully respect the work of the independent Authority and the judicial authorities and not to see again unacceptable phenomena like those with the Authority for Ensuring the Privacy of Communications (ADAE) in the wiretapping case. “Enough with the degeneration of the rule of law by the government of Mr. Mitsotakis,” he said.
Mr. Haritsis also said that “it is not the first time that the issue of leaking personal information from the Greek state’s website “gov.gr” has been publicly raised, recalling the “case with the SMS messages that contained the Predator malware, based on sensitive personal data from the vaccination applications that were registered on the state vaccination platform “emvolio.gov.gr”. He also claimed that we are facing a “looming scandal similar to that of Cambridge Analytica under Trump”. “It seems we haven’t seen the tip of the iceberg yet. In that case the leak was from a social media platform while here the leak appears to be from a government portal,” he said.
