With an amendment that tabled in the bill for the strengthening of the public university and the operating framework of non-profit branches of foreign universities the student housing allowance of all students is defined of the public HEIs, the Higher Schools of Tourism Education and the Merchant Marine academies of Greece, as well as the schools of Cyprus that are included in the nationwide examination system at 1500 euros.

If the beneficiary lives with another student in the same rented residence the housing allowance amounts to 2,000 euros.

For HEIs outside Athens and Thessaloniki the allowance of 1500 euros increases to 2,000 euros and in the case of cohabitation outside Athens and Thessaloniki it reaches 2,500 euros.

The text of the amendment is as follows:

“1. To the undergraduate students of the Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), the Higher Schools of Tourism Education and the Merchant Marine Academies of Greece, as well as the Schools of Cyprus that are included in the system of Pan-Hellenic Examinations, Greek citizens or citizens of other countries of the European Union, an annual housing benefit equal to one thousand five hundred (€1,500.00) euros is granted.

In the case of a beneficiary who lives with another student in the same rented residence, an annual housing allowance equal to two thousand (€2,000.00) euros is granted. Students studying for a second degree are not entitled to the allowance.

The annual housing allowance is granted under the same conditions to the trainees of public Higher Vocational Training Schools.

The allowance of the first paragraph is set at the amount of two thousand (€2,000.00) euros exclusively for beneficiaries studying at A.E.I. outside the Region of Attica or the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki, while exclusively in the case of a beneficiary studying at A.E.I. outside the Region of Attica or the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki and lives with another student in the same rented residence, an annual housing allowance equal to two thousand five hundred (€2,500.00) euros is granted.”
