Mitsotakis meeting with Al Sisi: Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection in focus

The meeting of the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, took place on the sidelines of the EU-African Union Summit in Brussels.

According to government sources, the meeting was held in a very warm atmosphere that reflects the excellent relations between the two countries. The two leaders discussed further strengthening of bilateral co-operation in the field of energy, as well as bilateral political, defense and economic relations and developments in the region. The meeting focused on the project of the Greek-Egyptian electricity interconnection and its strategic character. The two leaders described as a top priority the implementation of the project, which will be personally monitored by their staffs.

Mr. Mitsotakis and Mr. Al Sisi agreed to hold a teleconference in the coming days of all those involved with the participation of the two leaders.

Developments in Libya and EU-Egypt relations were also discussed. Mr. Al Sisi expressed his appreciation for the assistance provided by Greece and Cyprus in this direction.

Greece’s agreement with Egypt on the electricity interconnection of the two countries that will transfer “green” electricity from Egypt to Greece and from there to Europe, will be a key issue of the intervention that the prime minister will make shortly at the E Summit. “Electricity interconnections in the Eastern Mediterranean, such as the one that will be developed between Greece and Egypt, are very important. Through the Greek-Egyptian electricity interconnection, the EU can gradually ensure a stable supply of large quantities of green electricity and Greece “to be the bridge between Europe and Africa,” he said, according to government sources.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis also stressed that the added value of the Greek-Egyptian venture and Greece’s cooperation with Egypt does not only concern electricity, but the broader spirit of climate cooperation between Europe and Africa.
