Mitsotakis meets with Blinken and US officials: Developments in Ukraine and the Mediterranean in focus

Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a meeting with a cross-party delegation of the Senate and the United States House of Representatives, under Senator Lindsey Graham, as part of his contacts on the first day of the 58th Munich Security Conference.

The Prime Minister pointed out the excellent level of Greek-American relations in the last two years, but also the possibility of further developing the high level of cooperation in areas such as defense cooperation and investment.

At the same time, he stressed the importance of the 3 + 1 regional cooperation scheme – which includes Greece, Cyprus, Israel plus the United States – for regional peace and stability, noting the need to strengthen it.

He expressed the desire of some members of the congressional delegation to visit Greece soon as members of the inter-parliamentary committee of the 3 + 1 format provided by the Law on Defense and Interparliamentary Cooperation, which was adopted in December.

Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean as well as the latest developments in Ukraine were also discussed during the meeting.

On the sidelines of the meetings, the Prime Minister also had a brief conversation with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

Meetings with leaders of the Western Balkans

Then Kyriakos Mitsotakis had contacts with leaders of the Western Balkans.

In a meeting with his Albanian counterpart, Eddy Rama, he referred to the demarcation of the maritime zones between the two countries and stressed that submitting the issue to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, as the two sides have agreed, will further consolidate good neighborly relations, but and regional security and cooperation in the region.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined Greece’s firm support for Albania’s European perspective and course, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the accession process.

In addition, he had brief meetings with the new Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovachevski, with whom he had a recent telephone conversation, and with the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani.

Meeting with the leadership of the official German opposition

At the end of this cycle of contacts, the Prime Minister met with the new leader of the official German opposition, Friedrich Merz.

During the debate, he reaffirmed his willingness to work closely with the Christian Democrat parties, under their new leadership, and within the European People’s Party, and praised Mr Merz for his positive views on European issues. of particular Greek interest.

The prospects of Greek-German relations were also discussed, while the Prime Minister briefed his interlocutor on Greek energy policy in the region of Southeastern Europe.

Earlier, Mr. Mitsotakis had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder.
