The government will for reform and its modernization penitentiary systemworthy of our anthropocentric culture, both for those who live and for those who work every day in the network of penitentiary structures of our country, pointed out the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Lefteris Oikonomouin an extended teleconference, which took place also with the participation of the general secretary of Anti-Crime Policy, Konstantinos Papathanassiou and managers of 28 detention centers in Greece.

The teleconference took place in the context of the ongoing implementation of the innovative educational program “NESTOR – A National Network of Parents’ Schools to strengthen the parental role of prisoners “funded by the European ERASMUS + program”.

The project aims to strengthen the parental role of male inmates, living away from children and the family environment, operating educational laboratories for psychosocial support of inmates, with the catalytic assistance of the scientific staff of the penitentiary structures, so that the reintegration and social reintegration combined with the reduction of relapse cases and the restoration of family ties.

Mr. Economou also stated, among other things, that “for decades, the lack of vision and the absence of realistic and measurable goals in the field of imprisonment, are now being replaced by modern, scientifically proven methods and good European practices.”

Mr. Papathanassiou, for his part, stressed that through the strengthening of the family institution, both during and after the detention, imprisonment can be successfully achieved, as well as improve the psychosocial level of prisoners.

At the same time, special reference was made to the fact that the active involvement of the father in family life leads to a number of beneficial results, such as the optimal cognitive, emotional and moral development of children, the strengthening of their self-esteem and social ability. The detainee parent, upon completion of the program, will be better able to manage the bonds of relationships with his family environment.

It is also noted that the pioneering NESTOR program coordinates and implements the Center for Security Studies as the head of the consortium of the four partner European countries, Greece, Cyprus, Austria and Bulgaria.
