Society needs answers to the wiretapping scandal, says the Head of Justice of SYRIZA-PS, Alexandros Avlonitis.

The statements of Mr. Avlonitis in detail

“The unanimous decision of the Plenary of the Council of State (StE), by which the law enacted by the Mitsotakis Government in 2021, in order for the monitoring center to operate without restrictions, was deemed unconstitutional, is a “rape” for the Government and the Prime Minister himself .

The attempt to silence the Independent Authority and obscure the field of illegality collapsed. The mechanisms of the “Mitsotakis regime” cannot act unchecked. The government’s method of blocking the right of citizens to be informed about the reasons for surveillance reflects the decline of the Rule of Law in Greece.

This completely unconstitutional tactic must stop. The binding decision of the Supreme Court obliges the Government to comply immediately, without evasions or tricks.

We call on the Mitsotakis Government, instead of attempting to downplay the importance of the decision of the Council of Ministers, to undertake a specific legislative initiative to comply with it. Informing citizens about the reasons for their monitoring cannot remain pending.

And, finally, answers are due: Why were the surveillances of politicians, journalists and members of the country’s Armed Forces confirmed by the Independent Authority? How are the EYP’s monitoring related to the illegal use of malicious software? Who really pulls the strings? Does the director of “Maximo” remain?

The Government must sincerely apologize for the wiretapping scandal; and at the same time leave the Independent Authority and the Judiciary undisturbed in their work”.
