Memorandum of Understanding and cooperation in its field Civil Protection signed today by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis and Romanian Deputy Minister of the InteriorHead of Civil Protection, Raed Arafat, during the visit of Mr. Stylianidis – who accompanies the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to Bucharest.
At the same time, Mr. Stylianidis, announced in advance that in the context of pilot program for installation of European firefighters in Greece, which will be implemented in the summer, Romania will also participate with firefighters and vehicles. “I would like to express my appreciation to Romania for its commitment to participating with firefighters and vehicles. It is another tangible proof of Romania’s strong faith in European solidarity. This is a project that may be the basis for similar projects in the future. It serves our common goal for a stronger European solidarity “, Mr. Stylianidis stated characteristically, adding that this pilot program is carried out with the support of the European Civil Protection Mechanism. In addition, during their meeting, Mr Stylianidis and Mr Arafat agreed to work closely together to strengthen the European Civil Protection Mechanism and to facilitate the development of rescEU’s capabilities. “It is necessary in order to deal with the new and urgent consequences of the climate crisis. The strong link between climate change and civil protection is more apparent than ever. “Our approach must be based on three main pillars: prevention, preparation / preparedness and resilience”, noted Mr. Stylianidis.
Concerning the memorandum of understanding, this provides for cooperation in the following areas:
• Sharing lessons learned and general experiences from disaster management planning.
• Cooperation in the planning and management of emergencies.
• Cooperation in informing the public.
• Cooperation in trainings and exercises.
• Mutual participation in relevant conferences, workshops and other events.
As Mr. Stylianidis stressed, today’s signing of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries is “tangible proof of the strong cooperation between Greece and Romania in the field of civil protection” and added that it sends a “clear and strong message of cooperation and solidarity” as also “strengthens the basis of our already good cooperation”.
On the sidelines of their meeting, Mr. Stylianidis and Mr. Arafat also discussed ways to strengthen their cooperation both bilaterally and at European level, while Mr. Stylianidis made a special reference to the Romanian firefighters who assisted in the great fires of last summer.
“The firefighters left the best impressions on you in Greece, for their professionalism, for their knowledge and for their determination”, said Mr. Stylianidis, expressing his deep gratitude “for the support of Romania in Greece, but also for the solidarity they have shown to the Greek people “.
