Letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen with which they request the creation of a common shield for the air defense of Europe, with EU funding, the Prime Minister sent today Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk.

According to information from the agency Bloombergthe two leaders request that the matter be brought up for discussion at its next session European Councilscheduled to take place on June 27-28.

The head of the Commissionwho is running for a second term in next month’s European elections, seemed to embrace the proposal of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Donald Tusk, noting in her post on X: “Let’s continue to support Ukraine and at the same time strengthen our defense. We need less fragmentation and more joint projects, like an air defense shield proposed by @kmitsotakis and @donaldtusk.”

In their letter, the two prime ministers propose the shield to protect Europe from enemy aircraft, missiles and drones, while stressing that the approval of such a project at the European level would send a clear message in every direction about the determination of the Old Continent to defend itself. Greece and Poland are, along with the United Statesits members NATO that incurred the highest expenditure as a percentage of their GDP in 2023.

The two leaders also point out, always according to Bloomberghow building a common shield would act as a catalyst in favor of the upgrade and strengthening the European defense industry, while launching a greater degree of cooperation in this field.

It is recalled that Greece also supports other joint initiativessuch as the possible issuance of European bonds for defense spending or the establishment of a Community fund to finance arms procurement.

As he mentions the telegram, Kyriakos Mitsotakis discussed the issue of the shield -which he himself has compared in his recent statements to the Israeli anti-missile and anti-aircraft system Iron Dome that Israel uses- when he met with Donald Tusk in Warsaw in April.
