The President of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, had an extraordinary meeting on the developments in Ukraine. During his presentation at the meeting, Mr. Tsipras stressed:
“We are following with great concern the developments in Ukraine that certainly concern us all. And of course we unequivocally condemn the military operations – the invasion – of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, which violates the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country. And of course we condemn the revisionist logic on which it is based.
Unfortunately, the EU has not been able to rise to the occasion and contribute as a strong geopolitical force to this great crisis, as it has done in the past to other crises involving violations of international law. Today, the EU must use all diplomatic means to ensure a ceasefire, Russia withdraws from Ukrainian territory and return to the path of diplomacy. And Greece must move in this direction.
It is clear that we express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people and are very concerned about the Greek Community and the Greek citizens residing in Ukraine. The government must make every effort to support them.
However, I want to tell you that I am extremely concerned about whether developments in Ukraine find Greece prepared for economic and energy turmoil. For months now, our country has been setting pan-European records of accuracy in fuel and energy prices, with the most expensive wholesale price of electricity in Europe, but also with the increase of Greece’s dependence on natural gas due to violent de-ligation, while the whole Europe is reducing its exposure. Natural gas, which before the current negative developments in Ukraine we already paid 30% more expensive than in Bulgaria, something that all citizens have been experiencing for months.
The government must immediately, even now, prepare and restore the country’s energy security and the adequacy of gas from other sources under the framework agreements. And of course to present solutions and initiatives, both internally and through its intervention in the EU, that will reduce energy costs for all consumers to ensure the access of households and businesses. We will ask for detailed information and we will resubmit our proposals in this direction “.
It is noted that the meeting was attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, George Katrougalos and Giannis Bournous, the Ministers of Defense, Thodoris Dritsas and George Tsipras, the Minister of Energy, Socrates Famellos, the Diplomatic Adviser, Mr. international and European affairs Rania Svigkou, Mr. Tsipras’s advisor on energy and competition issues, Nikos Farantouris, the former Minister of National Defense, Evangelos Apostolakis, the former A / GES George Kampas and the former A / GEA, Christos Christodoulou.
