The prime minister argued that on June 9 the citizens are invited to answer if they want the country to stay on the path of progress it is already following
The political stake but also the main political dilemmas of European electionsof the coming Sunday he emphasizes again in today’s article in the newspaper “Manifesto” the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Specifically, Mr. Mitsotakis declares, among other things, that “on June 9, the citizens are invited to answer if they want the country to stay on the path of progress it is already following. Or whether they will allow uncertain experimentation and adventures that we paid dearly to be revived again. That is why their vote is crucial, as once again the ballot boxes will be empty and everything will be counted from the beginning. Far from the inactivity of abstinence and the frivolous and solitary “protest” that can ultimately lead to collective despair.”
In addition, the Prime Minister lists the main priorities of the next day in the European Unionfrom Immigration and the Common Agricultural Policy to efforts for common defense plans and the fight against high inflation, while accusing the opposition forces of “false promises without countermeasures and benefits from old left trees”.
The following is the entire article by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis:
The June 9 ballot is an important milestone for Greece and Europe as national priorities intersect with community stakes on many and parallel fronts: from the need to draw up a more flexible Agricultural policy and an effective action on immigration, to the strengthening of small and medium-sized enterprises and the construction of a single defense shield that will concern our continent as a whole.
Today, only New Democracy is talking about these goals in the face of the opposition’s silence. The faction that put Greece in the European family and kept it there when it was in danger. But also the party that, after 2019, from the position of the tail made it a protagonist among the “27”. So that she is now asking for her voice to be strengthened in the European Parliament in order not only to claim the Greek demands. But also to shape the Europe of 2030.
The New Democracy, after all, has shown examples of efficiency and national consistency: it established our borders at the Evros as the eastern limits of the Union after the immigration invasions of 2020. In the years of the pandemic, it pioneered the Green European Certificate. Later, when the energy crisis broke out, he proposed and succeeded in putting a cap on natural gas prices. While he succeeded and brought to Greece 36 billion from the Recovery Fund that he also proposed.
This year’s European elections, therefore, have a European as well as a Greek significance. Because the new Common Agricultural Policy means more resources for our farmers. Competitiveness in the Single Economy implies the stimulation of domestic development as well. European Autonomy marks our relief from some defense spending. Just as the regulation of the unfair practices of multinationals, which I recently asked the Commission to do, leads to the hit on accuracy.
At the same time, however, these polls will also test the uninterrupted continuity of internal political life, since the opposition is already highlighting them as “referendum” polls. It is no coincidence, in fact, that in the pre-election confrontation, false promises return without a response. The benefits from the old “money trees” that hide either new taxes or a return to the memoranda. But also the toxicity under the umbrella of the slogan for “overthrow”.
Reversal, perhaps, of which data? Of continuous growth and steady reduction of unemployment? Permanent increases in wages, pensions and benefits? The continuous rise of exports and tourism? Or perhaps the ongoing upgrade of the country’s hospitals and health centers? Of the big projects across the territory? Of the Digital School and Tutoring that is starting? And the equipment programs that proceed normally?
Unless our opponents demand that the policy of “legality everywhere” be overturned. That is, to return the violence in the stadiums. No cameras, digital ticket and penalties for hooligans. Abolish the panic button and the protection of women. Or anti-bullying measures in schools. Sledgehammers and Molotov cocktails to once again take the upper hand in universities. But also to stop checks everywhere: from the streets, shops and streets to the beaches…
So on June 9 citizens are invited to answer if they want the country to stay on the path of progress which is already following. Whether they will allow uncertain experimentation and adventures for which we paid dearly to be revived again. That is why their vote is crucial, once again the ballot boxes will be empty and everything will be counted from the beginning. Far from the inertia of abstinence and the frivolous and lonely “protest” that can bring, ultimately, collective despair.
Just as the Greece of 2024 is much better than that of 2019, so we can make the Greece of 2027 much better than today. In a country where a lot has been done and more remains to be done. Closing the door to demagoguery for good and keeping the window open to hope. Reducing our mistakes and increasing our efforts. So that June 9th becomes a new starting point on the road that will lead the country “steadily, closer to Europe”.
