It is indicative that out of the total of 9,605,244 registered in the electoral rolls, only 3,891,466 citizens came to vote
The pre-election forecasts of the ecologists, and the fears of the party staffs about very high rates of abstention of the Greeks from the European elections, were confirmed by the electoral results of the European elections.
It is indicative that from the total of 9,605,244 registered in the electoral rolls only 3,891,466 citizens came to vote, resulting in participation to reach only 41.05% and the abstention rate to jump to a record 59.5%.
The highest rate of abstinence is recorded in electoral district of Florina with 74%, while over 70% are also in Kefalonia and Laconia. Also, almost 67% of those registered in Dodecanese, Lesbos and Evrytania did not go to the polls, while the corresponding percentages are also high in Western Attica (62.55%) and Athens (60.70%).
In addition to the reduced interest of citizens in the European Parliament, the high rates of abstention in all electoral procedures is due and in the non-clearing of the electoral rolls by citizens who live permanently abroad, and their possible death has not been registered in a Greek registry office in order to be deleted from the electoral rolls.
To deal with this problem, the Ministry of the Interior has instituted and intends to implement from the very next period the deletion from the electoral rolls of the elderly which have years to give signs of life (by filing a tax return, etc.).
The abstention rates in the two previous European elections, in 2019 and 2014 they were 41.3% and 40.67% respectively, but then the elections were doubleas they were held at the same time as the self-governing elections, which are of greater interest to the majority of voters.
The second highest rate of abstention in European elections in Greece was recorded in 2009 with 47.46%, which even then were single.
