“SYRIZA is here. The president is here. We are not going anywhere until we change the country”, explained Stefanos Kasselakis, taking stock of the European elections before KO
In the assessment of the election result, but also in an invitation to PASOK and Freedom of Navigationto cooperate “transparently” within the framework of the parliamentary work, the president of SYRIZA-PS proceeded, Stefanos Kasselakis speaking to the party’s caucus.
Mr. Kasselakis stated that “he is not jumping for joy”, because “what suits SYRIZA is to be the protagonist”, however he estimated that after the European elections “a new political cycle has opened”.
As he said, the messages from the ballot box were “resounding”, as “ND suffered an unprecedented decline just one year after the elections”, with Mr. Mitsotakis achieving the “smallest number of votes in the history” of the party.
He even declared that he was “proud” that SYRIZA, with a “positive agenda” and a “tough opposition” demolished the “narrative of the 41%”. “And now the timer is counting down thanks to SYRIZA”, he said, while emphasizing that SYRIZA “endured” the “stubbornness” of those who wanted it “finished” and with “single-digit percentages”, even though it was “hurt by the double defeat and the double split.’
“SYRIZA is here. The president is here. We’re not going anywhere until we change the country,” he said, emphasizing that “a strong social base of political counterattack has now been created, against the most ruthless and arrogant government the country has ever known.” He pointed out that SYRIZA regained first place among young people, in many popular districts and among the undecided.
“On Sunday, the citizens answered the question “What SYRIZA do we want?”. A fresh, open, dynamic, self-confident, innovative and subversive party. Who speaks and thinks differently. Who cares about the rights of the many, against the interests of the few and chosen ones. With values and policies that cover the space from the modern patriotic left, to the progressive center”, he characteristically said, clarifying that “the progressive center has its home in SYRIZA”.
Regarding the debate that has opened about the cooperation of the progressive forces, he reiterated his position that he does not believe in “summit agreements”, as this would put SYRIZA in the “same frame as the already defeated and gives fear value to an already discredited prime minister’.
“To lock three or four political leaders in an office and agree on a union, instead of insisting on the path of transforming SYRIZA into an independent party of power that will invite democratic citizens to its side with an attractive narrative, is a mistake”, he underlined, while noting that SYRIZA is open to “embrace all progressive citizens without party yearbook and left-wing”.
He declared, in fact, that he was open to “trust-building measures” with other progressive forces and called on PASOK and Freedom Movement, as well as SYRIZA MPs, to cooperate in the “production of legislative proposals” with “transparency” and with “respect for the autonomy” of the parties.
As a first matter for cooperation, filed the indictment for Kostas Ah. Karamanli, regarding the “unpunished crime of Tempe”, while he stressed the need for the KOs to submit “constantly positive, pro-popular proposals”, to agree on them and thus form within the Parliament and in society “a reliable social front to overthrow Right-wing government.
As he said, “all the parties will be judged by their response”, emphasizing at the same time that SYRIZA “must change”.
“If theoretically more forms of the democratic faction reach the point of consensus then the last thing that would be an obstacle would be my own chair”, emphasized St. Kasselakis, explaining that if it is set as a “condition” that there is a “re-election of a President from the re-established party, from the largest progressive space”, that he would respond and re-candidate. “Leaders must always have the stamp of the base. And our base is bigger than the right-extreme right that governs us”, he said and ruled out, however, leaving “for a machine god to come”.
Continuing, he made it clear that “in this great party of the centre-left, there will be no abstentions from moral issues that belong to the right side of history – such as marriage equality or the immediate recognition of the State of Palestine”, leaving spikes against PASOK and stressing that this new “house” will be built in the fall, at the SYRIZA-PS statutory conference.
“Against us, we all have a real opponent in the anti-social government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis”, pointed out St. Kasselakis, predicting that ND “will never see a government again”, while on the contrary SYRIZA “knows what to do to go from 15% to 35%”.
In this context, the president of SYRIZA referred to a “bundle of initiatives that the party will undertake now that Parliament has reopened”.
This includes the submission of a proposal for the establishment of a Pre-Inquiry Committee on the “bazoma” in Tempe, the submission of a proposal for a law to remove the unconstitutional tax presumption for professionals and the self-employed, the submission of a proposal for a law on housing policy, a proposal for the comprehensive treatment of private debt to banks, the public and insurance funds, as well as a proposal for a new NHS and Welfare State, a proposal for the constitutional review and radical change of the unethical ministerial liability law and a series of proposals for transparency in party funding.
“This is the mission and responsibility of the democratic party. To submit sustainable proposals of law, to defend the law of the people and to expose daily this company that calls itself a government”, he underlined.
Additionally, St. Kasselakis wanted to open another “path of understanding” between the progressive forces, calling on them to “co-shape winning ballots in the Regions and Municipalities of the whole country” starting this year.
“I take responsibility as leader of the Official Opposition to lead these democratic sections. Let us put them on the table and ask for the response of all democratic forces. And there we will all be judged”, he said characteristically, underlining that in this effort “all the honest and capable executives of the progressive field” have a place.
“The election result is the starting point for our new beginning. The next day will be a better day,” concluded St. Kasselakis
