The National Coalition of the Far Right is the big winner of the first round of parliamentary elections in France. Rise for the New Popular Front, crash for Macron’s coalition.
The far-right National Rally (RN) is the big winner in yesterday’s first round of parliamentary elections in France. Collect it 33.4% of the votes and already 39 elected MPs, including Marine Le Pen. The Union of the Left with the New People’s Front (NPF) saw a steady increase with 27.98% of the vote and 32 elected MPs. The presidential coalition “Ensemble” suffered a heavy defeat with 20.76% of the vote and 2 elected MPs.
Stunned as if after a wild drunkenness, the majority of the French woke up today, in contrast to the remaining 1/3 who are celebrating the victory of the National Rally for the 33.4% of the votes it collected. Unprecedented victory of the Far Right, without “referendum value” however, as some are quick to say, since the remaining 2/3 of the population remain.
Voices for a “democratic front” are growing
The Popular Front of the Left reached 28%, emerged as the main opponent and has been active since last night, to attract the “Macronites” and the losers of the first round. To convince that “Yes, it is possible to raise a democratic barrier again, so that the Far Right cannot pass”. A “democratic front” as in the second round of 2002, with Jacques Chirac and Father Le Pen. Thanks to the then democratic front, all the leftists voted “holding their nose”, as they said, so that Le Pen would not pass. Jacques Chirac eventually won with an unprecedented percentage for a democratic country, more than 80%. Unfortunately, after the end of his term, the percentage of disaffected people who had believed the promises was just as high.
Today things have changed, the Far Right of Le Pen is not as scary as it was then, and those who still believe in a “democratic front” have dwindled. But there are still those who do not want to give up their weapons. They were the ones who gathered around 8 last night with militant slogans “No Pasaran!” in the Place de la Republique in Paris, but also in large cities in the south of France. They have one week to come up with strategies and candidates for the second round.
