With the president of Bulgaria Rumen Radev the prime minister will have a meeting at 4 pm Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the shadow of the challenges of its new leadership North Macedonia. Athens and Sofia are deeply disturbed by the defiant attitude of both the president of North Macedonia, Gordana Silianovska, and the prime minister of her neighbor, Christian Mickoski.
The issue of violation of the Prespa Agreement by the new leadership of North Macedonia was raised by the Prime Minister at the Summit of 27, clarifying that if Skopje insists on the same direction, they will de facto cancel their European course.
“I have therefore informed my colleagues in the European Council of this unpleasant development, and I have also made it absolutely clear that if Skopje persists in this line, they will essentially make extremely difficult – if not effectively nullify – any process of immediate convergence with European family. So I think that everyone should understand the consequences of their actions and know that compliance with the European acquis goes, obviously, through the faithful observance of international agreements that have been signed, in this case, by both parties,” said the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
For its part, Sofia accuses Skopje of violating the rights of the Bulgarian minority.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria strongly criticized on Wednesday tthe new government of North Macedonia, characterizing its intentions as “unacceptable” because refuses to abide by international commitments and agreements. The harsh announcement follows the statements of Christian Mickoski, which indicates the desire to renegotiate the negotiating framework with Bulgaria, comments the country’s news agency.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has denounced the North Macedonian government, accusing it of unwillingness to recognize the existence of a Bulgarian identity and language in the Republic of North Macedonia.
