There is no political problem from the event
Yiannis Oikonomou spoke to SKAI 100.3 about the threefold position-contrast-synthesis that traditionally drives the ND forward and yesterday’s event.
It was an event that constituted a political event, but which, in my view, does not create a political or governmental issue. ND is an open political party, a huge organization, it is an advantage to be able to discuss and submit opinions openly, boldly, often sharp, but completely left-wing. There are dimensions to the criticism of specific political choices, there are permanent positions of politicians, there are things that were heard in the parliamentary group and things that were heard yesterday with the distinct political weight of two former Prime Ministers and leaders of the ND.
The triptych of position, opposition and composition drives political parties forward. This discussion has been missing in general – and I’m not talking about ND – in recent years.
The fact that we recorded this result in the European elections should not lead us to excommunications, zeros, or leveling. They do not help, they are not in the right direction, and they do not completely interpret the result.
Obviously, we haven’t done everything wrong and obviously we shouldn’t undo important achievements of our government which started in 2019 and continues. But we cannot ignore that the world, mainly through its abstinence, said something to us and to the rest.
People sent some messages, mainly with anxiety about their standard of living, because that is the major thing. We are in the 5th year of government and with our policies we have provided answers to a number of issues, we are producing work, but we are faced with the fact that the world is having a hard time. This is happening all over Europe.
ND, as a large and powerful party, managed to achieve important things, with the balance of conservative values and liberal principles. I think we have to reinvent this balance and move in this direction through our policies that have a reflection in people’s lives. In ND I see a group in Parliament, our Parliamentary Group. Citizens only look towards the ND and this multiplies our responsibility.
People always trusted ND because it was the best. Our concern is that no matter what comes our way, it is to make the world’s life better.
